We continue to receive many queries on whether groups (Community Councils and Community Alert Groups) need to register with the Charities Regulator. Our initial advice from the Charities Regulator was that they all needed to register, as their activities are for the public good (and therefore they are charities). We have recently met with the Regulator’s office to explain the difficulties this can cause, particularly for smaller groups. The Regulator has therefore agreed that, for the time being, any group that is currently affiliated to Muintir na Tire does NOT need to register separately. If they wish to do so, they may.
There will be ongoing discussions with the Regulator’s Office and it is likely that groups will need some form of registration, possibly in about 2 years’ time. However, this is likely to be a simplified registration procedure for groups which are affiliated to Muintir na Tire and we will advise you at the time.
Please note this dispensation is only available to groups which are currently affiliated. All other groups must now register separately. This is another benefit of your affiliation (similar to being allowed use our CHY number rather than having to register with Revenue) and we thank those of you who continue to affiliate.
