Forum for Divestment and Beyond

Hello from SHEP

You may know that SHEP is a member organisation of Cork Climate Action network, along with Trócaire, and the Cork Environmental Forum, and other groups.  Cork Climate Action has organized a public meeting  - “Forum for Divestment and Beyond”  at which elected politicians from different parties will have an opportunity to share their views on the Divestment Bill 2017, which was sponsored by Trócaire, and which is currently at “committee stage” in the Dáil. The Forum will take place in the Imperial Hotel (South Mall, Cork), on Monday 8th May, at 8.00 pm

Michael McGrath T.D., who is chair of the Finance Committee (the committee in question), Donnchadh O Laoghaire, T.D.,  Grace O’Sullivan (Green Party) and others will be there, so this is an important opportunity to let your politicians know you care about climate change and its effects.

The push for “divestment” is a world-wide one, and involves calling for the withdrawal of investments from fossil fuel companies. The “reserves” of coal, oil and gas currently known about are around five times more than can be used without producing a level of global warming that may destroy human civilization, along with much of the rest of the web of life. Despite this, fossil fuel companies are busy searching for even more. Divestment would redirect investment funds to more eco-friendly businesses.  The Divestment Bill 2017 would ensure that Irish public money would not be invested in fossil fuel industries.  Although the amount of Irish government investment in fossil fuel industries is probably not large, divestment would have an enormous symbolic significance, and have an important impact on the growing world-wide campaign.

You can read more about divestment on the Trócaire website: https://www.trocaire.org/getinvolved/climate-justice/what-is-divestment

The level of attendance at this Forum is important: a large attendance would show the politicians that we consider climate change a major issue. A small number would encourage them to dismiss the issue as one not likely to get them votes. Please spread the word, on social media or otherwise.

If you can make it we look forward to seeing you there (with family and friends if possible!)

Best wishes on behalf of SHEP / Páirc a’ Tobair Earth Awareness Initiative and Cork Climate Action

Date/Time: Thursday 04th May 2017 at 19:30
Event: : History Ireland Hedge School in Cobh - as part of the Cobh Café Readers' and Writers' Festival
Location: Cobh Library, Cobh, Co. Cork
Additional Information: To mark the 100th anniversary of the arrival of the US navy into Cork there will be a History Ireland Hedge School on Ireland, the United States and the War at Sea, 1917, to be held in Cobh Library, commencing at 19:30 on Thursday May 4th, 2017.
1917 was the pivotal year of the First World War. At its outset German U-boats were inflicting huge damage on Allied shipping, while in the land war the loss of one ally, Russia, was not compensated by the gain of another, the United States. How did the Allies swing the balance in their favour by the year's end, particularly at sea? How central was Ireland (and Cork in particular) in this conflict? To address these and related questions join History Ireland editor, Tommy Graham, and the panel - John Borgonovo (UCC), Michael Kennedy (RIA's Documents on Irish Foreign Policy), Jennifer Wellington (UCD) and Michael Martin (Titanic Trail). The Event is supported by the Commemorations Unit, Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs. History Ireland Hedge Schools are lively, unfettered debates and provide a novel and interesting way to bring historical topics to life.

A note on the Cobh Café Readers' and Writers' Festival:

Date/Time: Thursday 4th May 2017 at 20:00
Event: : 'May-day Magic - Fairies, Witches and Dew-Charms'
Location: Scoil Mhuire Gan Smal (Blarney Secondary School, Blarney, Co. Cork
Additional Information: Blarney & District Historical Society presents an illustrated lecture titled: 'May-day Magic - Fairies, Witches and Dew-Charms' Since the date is quite close to May Day (May 1st), the focus of Guest speaker, Dr. Jenny Butler, Lecturer in the Study of Religions at U.C.C., talk will be on the fairies and the traditional celebration of the start of summer. This would bring in some legends of the Sídh (fairies) as well as historical (and continuing) customs. Who were the Sídh? Why do we still believe in and, sometimes, fear them? Dr. Butler also discusses how the earliest May Day celebrations appeared in pre-Christian times. It is also associated with the Gaelic word Bealtaine, The day was a traditional summer holiday in many pre-Christian pagan cultures. While February 1 was the first day of spring, May 1 was the first day of summer. Enquiries to Brian Gabriel 087 2153216.

Date/Time: May 5th to September 17th 2017
Event: : Portraits: Women of Cork and the U.S. Navy 1917-1919 : Organised by Damian Shiels
Location: Sirius Arts Centre, Cobh, Co. Cork
Additional Information: In 1917 thousands of American naval servicemen came to Ireland to participate in the First World War. Their interactions with local women, particularly in Cork where they were based, became a major social issue. Many Irish women ultimately married these American sailors, with Queenstown / Cobh in particular seeing a large number of weddings. Who were these women and what were their stories? New research by Damian Shiels to identify them using U.S. passport applications has revealed something of the past - and the portraits of many. The exhibition at Sirius Arts Centre will consider a number of these images, and the stories of those young women depicted.
Sirius Arts Centre is housed in the former Royal Cork Yacht Club building - a beautiful Italiante building that was designed by Anthony Salvin and built by James Smith Barry of Fota in 1854. The RCYC operated from here for over a century. During the first World War the building was used to host many of these American and British naval servicemen as a place to relax and socialize. Women were not permitted to socialize there nor could they become members of the yacht club until much later.
Damian Shiels is an archaeologist and historian with Rubicon Heritage Services Ltd. Formerly a curator in the National Museum of Ireland, he is a specialist on Irish military archaeology and history, on which he has published and lectured widely both nationally and internationally. His latest book "The Forgotten Irish: Irish Emigrant Experiences in America" was published by The History Press in 2016. This exhibition is kindly supported by the Port of Cork. Let's get talking about mental health this May. Support the Green Ribbon campaign.
See Change, the National Stigma Reduction Partnership has launched the fifth annual Green Ribbon Campaign, to promote open discussion of mental health during May 2017.
Throughout May, hundreds of local and national events will take place as part of the Green Ribbon national calendar.  This social movement to encourage a national conversation about mental health is led by 90 partner organisations, hundreds of volunteers and an unprecedented 80 campaign ambassadors with real-life experience of mental health problems who are ready to share their own stories to help others, and end stigma.
  • Pick up your Green Ribbon at one of the various community events on the national Green Ribbon calendar and at major Irish Rail stations and Boots stores nationwide.
  • Take part in National Time to Talk Day on Friday May 19th by simply making the time and space for a conversation about mental health with family, friends and colleagues. Join the conversation online at #TimetoTalk

Here’s our top tip for starting that conversation: You don’t have to be an expert to start talking about mental health or have all the answers. Sometimes the most helpful thing you can do is to let someone know that you are there for them and simply listen.

We often hear that we need to talk more about mental health and the simple and free Green Ribbon provides a practical way of turning that into action. The 500,000 people who will be wearing Green Ribbons this May will not only be showing their support for the campaign but also leaving the door open for conversation. For someone who might be going through a tough time, just knowing that they don't have to avoid the subject with you can make all the difference.

Are you ready to start your conversation?  http://www.greenribbon.ie/start-the-conversation

Don't forget to send details and photos from your events and initiatives to greenribbon@seechange.ie so we can promote them online.

Anam Cara, Bereaved parents meeting Cork City

Anam Cara, the organisation that supports bereaved parents, is holding its next monthly Parent Evening on Wednesday 3rd May from 19:30 to 21:00 in the Clayton Hotel, Silver Springs, Tivoli, Cork. This event is open to all bereaved parents regardless of the age your child died, the circumstances of their death, or whether the death was recent or not

If you think you know someone who might benefit, please consider passing the below information on to them. A parent told us recently:

Nothing is normal after the death of a child and it never will be again. Anam Cara helps. People may say that after, for example, two years you should just be able to pull up your socks and get on with it, but life is not like that when you lose a child. There is no timeline for getting over grief, it’s a continuous, daily thing. I would encourage any bereaved parents to come along. I know that anything that is unknown is often really scary, however, it's important people know there is no pressure or onus on anyone to talk at the meetings, just being there can help.

We would stress that this meeting is open to all bereaved parents regardless of the age their child died, the circumstances of their death or whether the death was recent or not. However, please note that the meeting is open to bereaved parents only.

If you yourself are supporting or potentially supporting bereaved parents, you might be interested in viewing the Anam Cara videos atanamcara.ie/videos. These involve testimonies from bereaved parents and couples who attend the Anam Cara groups. Anam Cara has also produced an Information Pack for Bereaved Parents, a free copy of which can be ordered by emailing info@anamcara.ie or ringing our Information Line on 085 2888 888.

Take Care
