Truly Love is in the air as we approach the big day next week - St.Valentine’s Day. Love has so many manifestations, the romantic Moonlight and Roses version, the physical male/female attraction. As the song says it’s the oldest yet newest thing. More poems have been written and songs sung about love than any other subject. Love is more than just attraction -it’s that feeling of closeness and togetherness and sharing common goals. During the last two weeks we saw the way people all over Ireland came together to help each other in the face of the country’s worst ever storm. That’s an example of the love people have for each other, often called the ‘meitheal’ in days gone by. Irish people in every corner of the country are great to rally to a good cause and next Thursday night in Conna this will be exemplified in a brilliant manner.
In the year 2003 Cancer Trials Cork was set up in CUH with Professor Seamus O Reilly as one of the driving forces. This pioneering Medical Unit is at the cutting edge of cancer research and developing and prescribing Trial Drugs is a huge part of the work. New drugs for the treatment of all types of cancer are being continually being developed. These trial drugs are a huge part of the ongoing treatment for so many cancer patients. Research into and the manufacture of these new drugs is a costly undertaking so funding for the Oncology Unit Clinical Trials in CUH is vital. When a local person in the Conna community was on trial drug treatment a group of locals came together with the idea of holding a fundraiser for Cancer Trials Cork. So on St Valentine’s night in Conna Community Hall the fundraising dance will go ahead. It will be like a throw-back to the Showband Era with the famous and much-loved Chicken Supper available for gourmet loving dancers.
The music will be provided by ‘Hell For Leather’ and there will also be a raffle for valuable prizes and a special ‘Going, Going Gone Auction’.
