Funding Available for Artists, Performers and Community Events in County Cork

Cork County Council has announced new funding opportunities for creative projects in towns, villages and rural locations. It is part of efforts to support performers and bring live events to communities right across the County of Cork.

The Council is administering three government funded schemes that aim to support artists, performers and community groups. Applications are now open for the Creative County Cork Grants Scheme, Cruinniú na nÓg and the Local Live Performance Programming Scheme.

Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr. Gillian Coughlan welcomed the funding, she said, “I hope that musicians, artists, performers and community groups in County Cork will make full use of the funding that is available. There is huge scope for imagination and creativity. The last two years have been extremely challenging for the live performance industry, but we also saw huge resilience. It was wonderful to see so many outdoor performances on beaches, parks and town centres last summer and I hope that can be replicated and expanded upon in the near future.”

As part of the Local Live Performance Programming Scheme, Cork County Council hopes to host another series of outdoor events in towns and other locations from April 1st to June 30th 2022. It is seeking expressions of interest from performing artists including ensembles, bands or individuals as well as promoters, producers, venues and festival organisations.

Chief Executive of Cork County Council, Tim Lucey added, “The Local Live Performance Programming Scheme provided support to over 650 professional performing artists, event producers and ancillary production personnel in County Cork last year. It also helped deliver more than 180 events that animated our towns, villages and rural locations, reaching an audience of at least 15,000 people. We want to support collaboration between artists, festivals, community groups, arts and heritage organisations as well as local businesses. The three grant schemes will help us to achieve this as we all work together to make County Cork as vibrant as possible.”

The Creative County Cork Grants Scheme is aimed at developing and delivering innovative projects, events and initiatives to help stimulate and enable creativity in every community. It is open to not-for-profit groups, organisations or collectives. The scheme is funded by Creative Ireland, a national five-year programme which connects people, creativity and wellbeing.

Funding is also available to run events for children and young people as part of Cruinniú na nÓg, a national day to celebrate and encourage participation in creative activities. This year, Cruinniú na nÓg will take place on Saturday, June 11th. Cork County Council is looking for projects that will allow young people to be inquisitive, inventive, try a new creative skill or showcase a special creative talent.

Further details can be found on Cork County Council’s online portal.

Mayor’s Community Awards 2022 Now Open for Cork County Nominations

The annual Mayor’s Community Awards for Cork County has been announced for 2022 to mark the outstanding contributions made by individuals and community and voluntary groups across the county.

Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr Gillian Coughlan is encouraging individuals and voluntary groups to contact their local Councillor or Public Participation Network (PPN) representatives to suggest nominees for this year’s awards,

“The Mayor’s Awards provide an opportunity to acknowledge just some of the local heroes that dedicate their time and efforts into making their community a better place to be. We all know someone who goes above and beyond to support their neighbours, contribute to local groups or improve their community in some way. If there is a special individual or group that deserves to be recognised for their efforts, please contact your local councillor or PPN rep to nominate them. On this the ninth year of the Awards, I am looking forward to celebrating Cork County’s true community heroes.”

There are two categories in which to nominate: Community and Voluntary Groups and Individuals. Mayor Coughlan will present a total of 11 Awards; which include 9 divisional awards, 3 for each of County Cork’s North, South and West divisions with two overall awards, one for an individual and one for a group.

If you or your organisation would like to put yourself forward, or you know of a group, volunteer or someone special who has made a difference in 2021, contact your local Councillor or a member of the Public Participation Network Secretariat.

The closing date for submission of nominations is Tuesday, 15th February 2022.

Significant Funding Awarded for Town Regeneration Projects in County Cork

Cork County Council has been granted almost €2 million in funding for rural regeneration projects in Fermoy and Macroom. The money will be used to rejuvenate the town centres, combat dereliction and drive economic growth.

The Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys TD, has announced €21.5 million for 27 projects across the country under the Rural Regeneration Development Fund (RRDF).

Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr. Gillian Coughlan welcomed the funding, she said, “Many rural areas have faced significant social and economic fallout as a result of the global pandemic. The proposals for both Fermoy and Macroom are responsive to this. We want to make our town and village centres the most attractive places to live, work, run a business, socialise and visit.”

More than €1.5 million has been awarded to Fermoy to deliver a town centre renewal project. It centres around adapting and reusing historic and vacant town centre buildings in a sustainable way as well as developing plans for a Craft Makers Hub. It also includes enhanced recreational facilities and public realm improvements. The project will be led by Cork County Council in partnership with Avondhu Blackwater Partnership CLG.

In Macroom, the funding will be used to develop a future vision for the former Church of Ireland building on Castle Street, transforming it into a flexible community, heritage and commercial outlet, in partnership with Lee Valley Enterprise Board, Macroom E and Macroom Tidy Towns. Funding of €395,000 has been granted and will also be used to improve accessibility and footfall in Macroom, connecting the Mill Dam/Masseytown area with the derelict church building.

Chief Executive of Cork County Council Tim Lucey added, “This funding is most welcome and will bring both projects through the development stage and to the point where they are ready to begin work. The funding will help transform Fermoy, delivering large-scale regeneration through targeted interventions. It’s about revitalising Fermoy town centre and driving it forward. The total cost of the Fermoy project is €1,925,000 with €1,540,000 awarded under the Rural Regeneration Development Fund. Cork County Council will fund the remainder. Macroom is a key heritage town with a fascinating history that goes to the heart of its identity. The project is centred around repurposing the former Church of Ireland building, an important landmark that has huge potential. Cork County Council is committed to working with local organisations, businesses and residents to achieve the best possible results for our county towns.”

The Rural Regeneration Development Fund provides investment to support suitable projects in towns and villages with a population of less than 10,000. To date, 191 projects across the country have been awarded funding of €277 million. Funding from the RRDF is provided to further the aims of Our Rural Future, the whole-of-government policy for rural Ireland for the period 2021-2025.
