EUROPEAN YEAR OF CULTURAL HERITAGE 2018:

2018 has been designated as the European Year of Cultural Heritage, a year that aims to encourage people to explore Europe's rich and diverse cultural heritage; celebrate, understand and protect its unique value and reflect on the place that cultural heritage occupies in all our lives. EYCH will be coordinated nationally by the Heritage Council and next year should see a number of local events that take account of our wonderful European Heritage. Presently the EU is now seeking applications for funding in respect of European Cooperation Projects and will be looking for those that reinforce a sense of belonging to a common European Space as well as projects that promote cultural heritage as a source of inspiration for artistic creation - very much in keeping with the underpinnings of Creative Ireland. The deadline for applications is 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday 22nd November 2017. Projects must have a maximum duration of 24 months and grants offered will not exceed 60% of total eligible costs.  for further information visit https://eacea.ec.europa.eu/creative-europe/funding/support-european-cooperation-projects-2018_en

NATIONAL INVENTORY OF INTANGILBE CULTURAL HERITAGE

Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Heather Humphreys TD, today (Thursday) launched an open, nationwide call for submissions to Ireland's National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage.  Once compiled, the list will acknowledge and promote Ireland’s living culture through official State recognition. In tandem with this, it will fulfil Ireland’s obligations under the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, which Ireland signed up to in December 2015 to raise awareness of, and respect for, our unique living culture. Intangible cultural heritage represents living forms of heritage that cannot be touched – unlike, for example, our built heritage. It refers to the practices, representations and expressions that are central to the lives and identities of our communities, groups and individuals.
Applications for Ireland’s National Inventory are being accepted in the following categories:
1.      Oral traditions and expressions, including language
2.      Performing arts
3.      Social practices, rituals and festive events
4.      Knowledge and practices concerning nature and the universe
5.      Traditional craftsmanship
Minister Humphreys said: “The traditions and practices of our communities are the backbone of Irish culture and identity. They mould our past, inform our present and pave the way for our future. Up to the present day, they have been a source of great inspiration and pride to our people. I believe that it is our responsibility to acknowledge and celebrate them at a national level for the Ireland of tomorrow.”
Individuals or organisations seeking to be considered for inclusion on the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage are invited to complete an Expression of Interest form. The deadline for applications is Wednesday 31 January 2018.

Is Your Child's Car Seated Fitted Correctly?

This November the RSA’s Check it Fits service is returning to  County Cork. Did you know it’s the law that all children under 150cms or 36kgs must use a child car seat appropriate to their weight and height. In Ireland as many as 4 out of 5 child car seats are incorrectly fitted which can lead to serious injury or even death in a collision.
The Check it Fits service is quick, it’s easy, it’s free. On the day experts will advise on how to fix any problem, demonstrate how to fit the restraint correctly and answer any queries participants might have. RSA experts aim to put parent’s, grandparent’s and guardian’s minds at ease that their child’s car seat is safely and securely fitted in their car.

Mitchelstown Community Council Win Pride of County Cork Award

A Delighted  Therese Horgan Sean Finn, Michael White, Ger Brennan and Frances Finn of Mitchelstown Community Council with the Pride of County Cork Award.
All the groups that participated in this year’s Pride in Our Community Competition came from all corners of the county to attend the Awards in Oriel House Ballincollig on Wed 25th October. The judging team were very impressed this year with the high standard of the projects that were involved and found it very difficult to choose an overall winner but Mitchelstown Community Council won both the Social Inclusion Award and the Pride Of County Cork Award. Their project was the development of Forrest Hall from a derelict building to a magnificent community Centre for all the people of Mitchelstown but particularly for Youth and the Elderly.

7243  Therese Horgan Sean Finn, Michael White, Ger Brennan and Frances Finn of Mitchelstown Community Council receive the Pride of County Cork Award Award from Deputy Mayor Mary Rose Desmond Cork County Council at the Muintir na Tire Pride in Our Community Awards in Oriel House Ballincollig. Also included are Councillors Deirdre O Brien and Kay Dawson
Deputy County Mayor Mary Rose Desmond praised Pride of County Cork Winner Mitchelstown Community Council, all the winners of the other categories and all those who entered the competition this year.  She said that it was great to see the effort being put in by community groups in developing projects that highlight the wonderful county we live in. She thanked Muintir na Tire for organising the competition and said ‘this great competition which rightly recognises and rewards community groups who develop new or existing locally-based Amenity/ Projects which are of long-term benefit to the local community’.
Mr Sean Murphy of Muintir Praised Cork County Council for their support for the competition particularly the Environment Directorate at Inniscarra under Louis Duffy.
Mr Sean Holland Chairman of the organising committee pointed out that the competition also seeks to make local people conscious of their local environment and promotes litter free communities. He said the competition is open to all voluntary groups in County Cork. Sean added that the organisers had simplified the competition after consulting with local groups. He urged any group that were planning a project or were maintaining an existing project to consider entering the competition

Ms Annette Lane of Cork County Federation Muintir ná Tíre said these projects highlight the important link between our surroundings and our quality of life.  She said these projects also brighten up communities and enhance the natural beauty of the surroundings in which we live as well as attracting tourists. She was particularly delighted that this year the introduction of the Youth Award had attracted entries from Youth Groups from all over the County. She said community projects like those developed by Mitchelstown make towns and villages better places to live especially for our Young people.
She thanked the Deputy County Mayor Mary Rose Desmond and Cork County Council for providing continued support for all of the groups in bringing this principle home.
