Location: The Toy Soldier Factory, Kilmamartyra, Macroom, Cork
Additional Information: On the 18th June 1815, over rolling countryside between two ridges 11 miles south of Brussels, the entire course of European history changed. On the Battlefield at Waterloo, the tactical skill and staying power of the Irish born Duke of Wellington opposed Napoleon Bonaparte's military brilliance, in an effort to decide the providence of Europe. If you have never been to Waterloo, or indeed to any battlefield, fear not as the Toy Soldier Factory will be displaying Phase 1 of the world's largest battle scene "The Battle of Waterloo" in Ireland's and Europe's only Toy Soldier Factory. The huge Diorama totaling 26 x 13 feet (8x4 Metres) in size, houses 15,000 hand cast and hand painted Prince August Model Soldiers by Andre Rudolph from Germany. It took Andre 8 passionate years to complete his creation. The mighty scene will arrive on Irish shores over the next few weeks and will be transported carefully to its new home in the tiny village of Kilnamartyra just outside Macroom town in West Cork.

Lars Edman MD of the Toy Soldier Factory is honoured and excited at Phase 1 of a 5 year plan to implement carefully the three day long struggle of The Battle of Waterloo. "We are delighted with the way the new construction of the enormous room is going, where the large battle scene will reside for the next five years. This June will commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo. We have to showcase this battle correctly to emphasize to the public how important it was to Europe's history so we are planning to incorporate a multimedia show with lights and sound effects in future development into this epic installation as this was a defining moment in Europe's history, ending 23 years of war" says Lars Edman. Lars quoting the words of the renowned Dublin born Duke of Wellington "It was the most desperate business I ever was in: I never took so much trouble about any battle - and never was so nearly beat."

The Unveiling of the Large Battle of Waterloo diorama will take place on Sunday April the 12th and "maybe even before that date. Keep a close eye on our Facebook" Lars says. The demand for this event is extremely high and therefore you are urged to book as soon as possible by going to their web site on www.toysoldierfactory.ie . Tel: 026 40342 or follow their event page on Toy Soldier Factory Visitor Centre Facebook page.

Suspended Coffees Movement Founder to Launch Friendship Week

There's an old tradition in Naples, Italy called 'Caffè Sospeso' where someone who is pretty well off would buy a coffee and an extra cup which was suspended for someone less fortunate.
That great tradition was the inspiration for Cork man John Sweeney's Suspended Coffees Movement, which is now in operation in over 1,800 coffee shops in 20 countries in the world.
John tells  how an idea that originated in Fermoy has managed to touch so many people across the globe. "While the idea was about giving someone a coffee it soon became much more. I created a Facebook page that only shares good heart-warming content and people loved it." The project is so important to John because he's been through tough times throughout this project and knows how much of a difference a small gesture can make. "We didn't have a thing, I wasn't able put food on the table, but I stuck at it because I believed in it and the impact it was having,"

John will launch Fermoy Friendship Week in the Fermoy Youth Centre next Wednesday 18th March at 11 am.

STRUCTURES AT RISK SCHEME 2015

Cork County Council is now inviting applications under the Structures at Risk Fund, 2015. This scheme was introduced by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and the amount of funding being made available nationally is €624,000, to be divided amongst the 31 Irish Local Authorities.

The purpose of the Structures at Risk Fund (SRF) is to assist with works to safeguard structures protected under the Planning and Development Act 2000 (as amended); including works to proposed protected structures, and in certain cases, works to safeguard structures within Architectural Conservation Areas, where, in the opinion of the Department, an urgent need for works to such structures has arisen and has been demonstrated. Only structures in immediate danger of significant deterioration will qualify for consideration for funding by the Department. The scheme is not intended to assist in the carrying out of routine maintenance, alterations or improvements.

Due to limited capital resources available only two applications from each Local Authority will be accepted for consideration by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht.

The attached document outlines the operation of the scheme and includes the relevant application forms. Anyone interested in applying must ensure their application (completed form together with accompanying documents such as photographs, method statements, etc.) is submitted to the Heritage Unit of Cork County Council, no later than 16.00 on Friday the 13th of March 2015, in order to comply with the timescales set out by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, for this scheme. Applications will be assessed under the criteria of the scheme. Two applications will then be chosen for submission to the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht for consideration of funding. Please be advised that incomplete or late application forms will not be accepted under any circumstances.

Fermoy Friendship Week,

The people of Fermoy are looking forward to a host of events which are taking place in the town to mark Fermoy Friendship Week, Locals and in particular local school children are being encouraged to embrace the sentiments of the week by carrying out random acts of kindness. Participating schools have also been provided with Random Acts of Kindness boards and over the course of the week, students, teachers and staff are asked to be more conscious about being kind and nice to others and to write stories of kindness on the board, as a way of spreading the message about the week and raising people's spirits. Please click the following link for the story of how Bishop Murphy Memorial School took up the Random Acts of Kindness Challenge.

Fermoy Friendship week takes place from March 23rd -27th   and groups and people in the community are being called on to mark the week in their own way, with small events and little acts of kindness. Organised by Fermoy Community Network, this year the project will have a Launch on the 18th March, the week before the actual event and this in itself promises to be an attraction.  Guest speaker will be local man, John Sweeney who has risen to prominence with his involvement with the suspended Coffees initiative.  John is the embodiment of being a kind and loving Friend and his actions show us quite explicitly how we can all make a difference to this world by making it a little bit nicer for everyone particularly those excluded and downtrodden.

The week itself kicks off on Monday 23rd March with a talk on infant mental health and will be provided by members of a local learning network that has been meeting in Fermoy since 2010 on learning about infant mental health.  The key message is that mental health is something that starts from a young age and there are simple ways that we can encourage and help promote positive infant mental health.
The following evening will have a talk in the Youth centre at 7PM on ADHD and this will be provided by Joe Jeffers who is the co-ordinator of a support group for parents based in the city.
Light entertainment follows on Wednesday and Thursday with a social afternoon in the Youth centre hosted by the Mens’ Club on the Wednesday and on the Thursday by groups located at the community resource centre.

The final day a training session will be provided on Traveller culture and this will be delivered by members of the Traveller Cultural Awareness team in Cork.  Places will be limited for this event.

Exhibition and Lectures on Fermoy's War - World War I
Location: Palace Theatre, Fermoy Community Youth Centre, Fermoy
Additional Information: Interest is growing in the World War 1 event scheduled for Saturday, March 7 at the Palace Theatre in Fermoy. The event will not only serve to remind us of those who died in the war, but is particularly concerned to commemorate those who survived the war and returned to Fermoy, Mitchelstown and the local villages and town lands. If you know of anyone who fought in the war and survived, we particularly look forward to welcoming you. The Western Front Association will conduct research into military records. If you want to research an ancestor, to do so and to make the most of their expertise and their findings, please provide as much information as possible, such as date of birth, service number, the name of the regiment. This is a great opportunity for people to reflect on those who returned from battle to a changed world where their story was not to be told and who had to, as a result, bear their burden of horror and mayhem in silence. We will create a dynamic wall of commemoration to honour the survivors of the war and hope that you will help us add as many names as possible to it on the day. Every local family had some experience of the war and most knew somebody directly involved in it. This one-day event will be an opportunity to add these survivors of the war to the historical record. Military service research, remarks and talks by military historians, memorabilia and personal experiences of learning about this historical period will be the order of the day. For more information, please contact Kieran Barry at (025) 32042 and see the attached poster

All applications shall be submitted to the Heritage Unit, Planning Department, Floor 3, County Hall, by 16:00 on Friday the 13th of March 2013. The submission must include an electronic version of the application and associated documents, the size of which shall not exceed 15MB.

Please click here for further information and for the application form itself. For all additional queries please contact the Conservation Officer, Heritage Unit, Floor 3, County Hall, Cork, 021-4276891.
