Big interest in new East Cork heritage book

Saleen, East Ferry and the adjacent areas of Jamesbrook and Rathcoursey are unspoilt gems in East Cork. It is a region rich in heritage dating back to prehistoric times. This scenic area is favoured by walkers and is a popular bird watching location.
For the past few years, Saleen & District Residents’ Association has facilitated an annual heritage walk of the area, led by local historian Charles Hayes. These walks, popular with all ages, have generated lively discussion as participants share their knowledge of the area. Such discussions prompted the need to gather hitherto undocumented oral evidence, memories and stories of the Saleen, Bawnard, Rathcoursey, East Ferry and Jamesbrook areas, from current and former residents, before the opportunity is lost forever.
This information has been included in a new heritage book ‘Times & Tales of an East Cork Community’ which will be launched on Saturday November 12th at 7pm in Saleen National School. The stunning, full colour, hardback edition, with 280 full-colour pages, encompasses a unique mix of geography, history, archaeology and lore while also recording social history, local ‘characters’, local customs and lifestyles. It documents the many significant buildings and features of the area and the many changes from prehistoric times, through to Penal times and up to the present day.
In addition to written heritage, ‘Times & Tales’ provides a photographic record of the area. Saleen & District Residents’ Association appreciates the wide support of the local community in providing old photographs. These have been complemented by a range of recent photographs of people and places. We are particularly grateful to Austin Cleary (East Cork Studios) for the amazing front cover image of Poulnabibe Dolmen and also for many other images throughout the book.
The author Charles Hayes, a native of the area, is widely respected in East Cork and beyond. He taught History and Geography for many years in St.Mary’s High School, Midleton and has previously written a number of post-primary history and geography text books. ‘Times & Tales’ is edited by Michele O’Driscoll and published by the members of Saleen and District Residents’ Association, all of whom worked on a totally voluntary basis for the project. We are thankful to the numerous individuals and bodies who have contributed in so many ways to ‘Times & Tales’ and hope that all will now enjoy the fruits of what has been a big community event.
‘Times & Tales’ will be a delight to anyone living in, connected with or just merely interested in the area. It contains something for everyone … stories of land and sea – including farming, fishing, sailing, rowing and smuggling and local faces and places past and present. Learn about the former thriving fishing village of Rathcoursey, the Queenstown businessman who accepted the ‘King’s Shilling’ or local ‘characters’ with nicknames such as ‘Dublin’ and ‘Angel’.
All are welcome to the launch on Saturday November 12th at 7pm in Saleen National School. ‘Times & Tales’ will be introduced by guest speaker Mr Barry Crockett, former Master Distiller in Midleton Distillery.
Interest in this limited-edition book has been such that many copies have already been pre-purchased. To order a copy, contact Jerry O’Brien at 086-8262746 or Liam Robinson at 086-2457019/021-4636995 (9am to 6pm). The book will also be on sale at the launch. Priced at €25, this is a book to treasure and a wonderful Christmas gift.
Any profits from the project will be used by Saleen and District Residents’ Association for further conservation and appropriate developments in the local area.

Muintir na Tire - Community Alert - Property Log-Book

Launched formally at the Cork County Joint Policing Committee which took place on Monday, 24th October at 2.30p.m.  in Vertigo Suite, Floor 17, County Hall, Cork.

Ms. Josephine Feehily, Chair of the Policing Authority was the invited Key-note speaker,

The meeting was followed by a Press launch of the Cork County JPC Strategic Plan 2016 – 2021 and of the Joint Policing Committee supported Muintir na Tire / Community Alert Property Log-Book.

The Property Log Book, provides local community groups of which almost 1000 have already registered with the Cork Co Council Public Participation Network.

The possibility of combining;
1.            Involving Members.
2.            Crime Prevention and
3.            Fund Raising

Achieving as a consequence;
1.            Restoration of stolen property.
2.            Convictions.
3.            Decrease in thefts and burglary.

By providing the benefit of;
  1. Having all details of property stolen to hand for a crime report.
  2. Enabling Gardaí to restore recovered property to the rightful owner.
  3. Enabling Gardaí to link the criminal in whose possession a stolen item is found, to the crime.
  4. Deterrence factor of widespread publicity about the logging of items, to criminals considering a theft.
  5. A measurable decrease in thefts – eventually.
  6. A valuable fund raising initiative, for local groups who get behind the project.
  7. A valuable Crime Prevention and profile raising exercise by local groups.

This project is not, and should not be confused with property marking which is a valuable additional deterrent.

Gardaí frequently recover stolen property, but then the problem arises as to whom, a particular item belongs to.
Indeed, frequently linking a criminal to a robbery, depends on a victim proving that an item belongs to him.

The Property Log Book is a long term project – because there is a mind-set change / paradigm shift required, which will only come about as a result of members of local community groups promoting the use of the log book and getting the message across that it’s a “no-brainer” not to have the details completed should an item of property happen to be stolen.

This project is simple basic common sense, a focus on being prepared for the worst rather than hoping for the best.

Recognising that all community organisations face a dual challenge of how to increase the involvement of their membership, and the invariable struggle to raise funds.
Cork Co Council in association with Muintir na Tire - Community Alert will be distributing the Property Log Book, in bulk at a nominal cost to community groups registered with the Cork Co PPN and Muintir na Tire - Community Alert.

They hope it will quickly find a place in every home.

The Joint Policing Committee Strategic Plan 2016-2021 which was launched at the meeting describes as being among its functions the need;
To identify and promote actions that will enhance security – personal and property related – within the Cork region.

The Joint Policing Committee Strategic Plan 2016-2021 also describes as being among its functions the need;
Develop a programme of actions that will reduce the incentive for acts of crime to occur within the Cork region.
Develop a programme of actions that will increase the detection and prosecution rates relating to acts of crime occurring within the Cork region. The Property Log Book fulfils that function.

Deadline for Text Alert Rebate Scheme nears

On the 22nd Sept 2016 at the Ploughing Championships, the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality, Frances Fitzgerald, has announced a major new incentive for group Text Alert networks. The new Text Alert Rebate Scheme, which will be administered by Muintir na Tíre, will provide increased funding for all eligible Text Alert Groups.

Speaking at the Muintir na Tire / Community Alert stand, when she visited the National Ploughing Championships, Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald said that the funding for the Community Alert programme now incorporates a new €100,000 rebate scheme for local groups registered under the Garda Text Alert Scheme.

Muintir na Tíre CEO, Niall Garvey, welcomed the announcement saying it was the culmination of intensive lobbying by Muintir na Tíre. He said “Text Alert has been a phenomenal success in preventing crime. Muintir na Tíre, in partnership with an Garda Síochána, has rolled this programme out to almost 1,000 local community groups, mainly Community Alert groups.”

He added “Until now, the groups have been responsible for their own costs and have accepted this as a means to reduce crime in their areas. However, this new scheme recognises those efforts and costs, and will go some way towards reducing the burden on local residents.”

Under the scheme, eligible groups will receive a rebate of at least €100 towards their operating costs. Groups can apply by completing a simple application form available at www.muintir.ie/Text-Alert-Rebates or by contacting Muintir na Tíre Community Alert Development officers, before 31 October next. This scheme will be fast-tracked with payments made before the end of the year. It will then be reviewed in early 2017.

In conclusion Mr Garvey said “Community Alert, and Text Alert, represent the most positive way communities can prevent crime and increase safety in their areas. Since it was launched at the Ploughing Championships three years ago, Text Alert has developed incredibly to involve over 164,000 subscribers with an estimated 3 million text messages sent in the last year.” He said “we look forward to continuing this positive partnership with an Garda Síochána and the Department of Justice and Equality.” Niall Garvey, CEO, Muintir na Tíre (086) 2460136 / ngarvey@muintir.ie

ANAM Cara supporting bereaved parents... Parent Evening on Wed 2nd Nov 19:30 Brú Columbanus,

Anam Cara, the organisation that supports bereaved parents, is holding its next monthly Parent Evening on Wednesday 2nd November from 19:30 to 21:00 in Brú Columbanus, Cardinal Way, Wilton, Cork

If you think you know someone who might benefit, please consider passing the below information on to them. A parent told us recently:

Nothing is normal after the death of a child and it never will be again. Anam Cara helps. People may say that after, for example, two years you should just be able to pull up your socks and get on with it, but life is not like that when you lose a child. There is no timeline for getting over grief, it’s a continuous, daily thing. I would encourage any bereaved parents to come along. I know that anything that is unknown is often really scary, however, it's important people know there is no pressure or onus on anyone to talk at the meetings, just being there can help.

We would stress that this meeting is open to all bereaved parents regardless of the age their child died, the circumstances of their death or whether the death was recent or not. However, please note that the meeting is open to bereaved parents only.

Anam Cara, the organisation that supports bereaved parents, is holding its next monthly Parent Evening on Wednesday 2nd November from 19:30 to 21:00 in Brú Columbanus, Cardinal Way, Wilton, Cork. This event is open to all bereaved parents regardless of the age your child died, the circumstances of their death, or whether the death was recent or not.

If you yourself are supporting or potentially supporting bereaved parents, you might be interested in viewing the Anam Cara videos atanamcara.ie/videos. These involve testimonies from bereaved parents and couples who attend the Anam Cara groups. Anam Cara has also produced an Information Pack for Bereaved Parents, a free copy of which can be ordered by emailing info@anamcara.ie or ringing our Information Line on 085 2888 888.
