Cork County Council has launched a second round of its Circular Economy Fund, with the aim of empowering local action to reduce waste. The fund aims to support communities to move away from the traditional linear ‘take-make-use-dispose’ model towards more circular living where resources are reused or recycled.
This year, schools, community groups, sports clubs, and festivals are invited to submit proposals aimed at minimising single use plastics. These plastic materials pose a significant threat to our environment, contributing to pollution in our oceans and harming wildlife.
With an increasing demand from the public to reduce single use plastics and a desire from communities to act, the fund will support projects such as the installation of temporary or permanent water refill stations or reusable cup or container schemes in schools, community buildings, sports clubs and at festivals. The Council hopes to build on the success of recent years, which has seen over 40 water refill stations installed in schools and community buildings as well as numerous pilot mobile hydration stations at events across the county.
Applications for the Circular Economy Fund are now open and will be accepted online until Friday the 21st of February at 5:00pm. Eligible applicants in the Cork County Council administrative area include schools, community groups, sports clubs, festivals and events. Commercial, for-profit bodies are not eligible. Only applications addressing the single use plastics theme will be assessed in the 2025 Fund, the ambition is to focus on a wider range of circular themes in future years. Cork County Council is inviting applications from community and voluntary groups for funding under the new Local Enhancement Programme (LEP) Fund 2025. The scheme follows on from the very successful 2024 programme which supported over 160 groups in Cork County.
Funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development, the LEP allocation of €277,633 for County Cork will support groups, particularly in disadvantaged areas, to carry out necessary repairs and improvements to their facilities and to purchase equipment such as furniture, tools, signage, IT equipment, lawnmowers, canopies, and training equipment. The fund can also support non-pay running costs, for example, energy costs, rental/lease costs, or insurance bills.
Welcoming the fund, Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr. Joe Carroll said, ‘Cork County Council is proud to support community and voluntary groups who make valuable contributions to local communities in every corner of our county. Funding such as this will help to support groups to carry out repairs and maintenance and improve their facilities and also help with their day-to-day operations. I encourage groups to consider making an application, to avail of this opportunity.’
The closing date for applications is Monday the 17th of February 2025 at 3:00pm. Applications can be made online through the Council’s website www.corkcoco.ie.

The LEP is supported by Cork County Council’s three Local Community Development Committees (LCDCs).

Cork County Council hosted a celebratory event for Tidy Towns groups across the county to recognise their remarkable dedication to enhancing the beauty, sustainability, and sense of community in Cork’s towns and villages. The event, held at County Hall, brought together representatives from Tidy Towns groups and expert speakers to share achievements, exchange ideas, and inspire future initiatives.
The event featured workshops and presentations from Tidy Towns adjudicators, Cork County Council representatives, and community leaders, covering topics such as sustainability, pollinator plans, and the competition application process. Among the expert speakers were Debbie Bailey, Gary Graham, and Bernadette Solon, who provided valuable guidance to attendees on improving their projects and maximising their success in the Tidy Towns competition.
Tidy Towns groups showcased their achievements through interactive stands, inspiring others with new and innovative approaches. The event also emphasised the importance of biodiversity, sustainability, and fostering green spaces in light of the growing environmental challenges facing communities.

Cork County Council has announced support of over €1.8 million to enhance community engagement and facilities in 2025. The Community Fund Scheme supports a range of projects and initiatives by local voluntary groups and organisations each year and opens for applications on Monday the 13th of January.
Last year, 398 groups including Tidy Towns, community associations and sports clubs benefited from the fund, using it to create gardens, deliver infrastructure projects, buy sports equipment, and improve their facilities.
The Community Fund Scheme is administered locally by the eight Municipal Districts across the county under three distinct fund types: The Capital Fund, Community Contract and The Amenity Fund.
Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr. Joe Carroll, expressed his support for the 2025 funding scheme, highlighting the innovation shown by Cork communities over the past year, ‘I am continually inspired by the incredible work carried out by community groups under this scheme. The Community Fund supports a wide range of meaningful projects and initiatives each year, and I am proud to see this vital support continue in 2025.’
Chief Executive of Cork County Council, Moira Murrell, added ‘This year marks the 11th year of the Council’s commitment to support communities and organisations across the county. Sustainability, growth, and engagement within communities is vital to the local economy. Cork County Council is delighted to continue to provide this significant funding of €1.8 million for 2025.’
Guidelines for the scheme and details for online applications are available at the link below. Applications will close at 4.00pm on Friday the 14th of February 2025.

I refer to previous correspondence regarding the Community Recognition Fund 2024 (CRF24).
The Department of Rural & Community Development has recently provided an extension of time for Window 3 applications under this Scheme to all Local Authorities.
The extended closing date for applications under this final Window of CRF24 is now Monday 17th February 2025 – this is to facilitate an assessment of the applications received, prior to submission to the Department by the Scheme revised deadline of 28th February 2025.
As previously advised, we are particularly interested in receiving applications from areas that may not yet have received funding (or have received minimal funding), under the Community Recognition Fund (CRF) 2023/2024, but are hosting New Arrivals.
Please note the Department of Rural & Community Development has not issued the outcome of Window 2 applications, an announcement is expected in the coming weeks. If you have already submitted an application under Windows 1 or 2, please do not re-apply through the Dash Portal as this will result in duplication of applications – in such cases, please contact us via the email address below to confirm your continued interest in the fund for that project.
Applications can be submitted at https://www.
Any queries regarding the scheme can be sent to CRF@corkcoco.ie.

Community Survey Launched for Macroom and Mitchelstown

Members of the public in Macroom and Mitchelstown are being invited give their views on the future of their local town.
In May, Cork County Council was allocated €10,000 for each of the towns by the Department Department of Rural and Community Development under the Town Centre First Policy. The funding is aimed at supporting the development of Town Teams and undertaking research to identify the key priorities for both Macroom and Mitchelstown.
The aim of the Town Centre First Policy is to create town centres that function as viable, vibrant and attractive locations for people to live, work and visit, while also functioning as the service, social, cultural and recreational hub for the local community.
The surveys will help Cork County Council and local community and business stakeholders to prioritise the planning of projects and initiatives as well as developing funding applications to progress them.
A Town Team is a group of local residents, businesses, community representatives and other stakeholders who come together to collaborate with the local authority and consider ideas to make their area a better place to live, work and visit.
To complete the survey, visit Cork County Council’s website www.corkcoco.ie Alternatively, printed copies of the survey are available at Macroom and Mitchelstown libraries. The survey takes only a few minutes to complete and will be open until Friday the 6th of December.
