Lights of Love Remembrance Tree Event

Lights of Love Remembrance Tree 2025
Fermoy Community Health Project, Fermoy Community Resource Centre and the Fermoy Committee of Cork Mental Health invite you to their annual Lights of Love Remembrance Tree event.  The event takes place on Sunday, 7th December, 5 to 6pm, at the Fermoy Community Resource Centre, 42 McCurtain Street. All are warmly welcome.

What to expect at the Lights of Love Remembrance Event
Sponsor a Light (5pm – 5.45pm)
When you arrive, you will be welcomed into the Fermoy Community Resource Centre and guided towards the Cahill Room. Here, if you wish, you may sponsor a light on the Remembrance Tree for a €5 donation — each light symbolising the memory of someone special.
Each sponsorship includes a Lights of Love remembrance card, printed this year on plantable seeded paper.

You can also write a named dedication for the memory frame, which will be displayed beside the tree throughout the Christmas and New Year season.

Taking Time to Reflect (throughout the hour)
Guests are invited to enjoy seasonal refreshments in the kitchen, kindly provided by Meals on Wheels. Music will be performed by the Fermoy Men’s Group choir. You are welcome to spend time in the peaceful garden, or to connect with others in this shared spirit of remembrance and comfort.
Tree Lighting Ceremony (5.45pm – 6pm)
We will gather together in the courtyard in front of the Remembrance Tree for reflections, the lighting ceremony, and a final piece of music.  The ceremony will be live-streamed on the Facebook page Lights of Love Remembrance Tree Event – Fermoy.
The lights on the tree will continue to shine throughout the Christmas season, offering a symbol of hope and remembrance as we move into the New Year.  For more information, contact Jacinta McCormack, Community Health Worker, on 085 874 2320.

Cork County Council Unveils Budget of €526 Million for 2026

Two statues in front of county hall.

Cork County Council has approved a €526 million budget for 2026, which includes increased investment in frontline services such as roads maintenance, housing maintenance, library operations, public conveniences and estates taken in charge.

The investment, an increase on 2025, reflects the Council’s commitment to deliver the services needed to enhance urban and rural communities across the county.

The budget has a strong focus on housing, with €2.9 million proposed for day-to-day repairs, energy efficiencies, and bringing housing stock back into use.

It aims to support economic development and includes specific funding for land acquisition and the upgrading of industrial sites. €678,000 has also been allocated for burial grounds expansions as well as funding for piers, harbours, and climate action.

The Council’s decision in July to vary the Local Property Tax base rate by 15% generates an additional €1.9 million annually. This funding will be ringfenced for the Municipal Districts, representing a €7.6 million investment between 2026 and 2029 which will deliver tangible new infrastructure across communities within the four-year period. This equates to additional funding of over €900,000 for each Municipal District between 2026 and 2029.

The budget for 2026 will see no increase in the Annual Rate on Valuation (ARV) for commercial rates. A 3.5% rates incentive scheme will benefit all rate payers based on a rates bill amount of up to €7,000. This year, for the first time, there will be a rates waiver scheme to incentivise the occupation of long-term vacant properties in Kanturk, Mallow and Youghal, with a waiver of 75% of the levied bill in year 1, 50% in year 2 and 25% in year 3 subject to scheme eligibility criteria.

The Council’s Capital Programme 2026–2028 was also presented on Monday.

The Capital Programme has been built with the intent of meeting the objectives, as adopted by Cork County Council, of the Corporate Plan 2025–2029, County Development Plan (CDP) and Local Economic and Community Plan (LECP).

The programme represents an investment in capital infrastructure of €1.42 billion over 3 years with 39% of this on housing and 32% on roads.

The Capital Programme is a rolling programme. It is revised annually as time, delivery capacity, and priorities may vary the progress of particular projects within a given period.

Cork County Council Announces Eight Cost Rental Homes in Baile Adaim, Carrigtwohill

Picture of row of white houses.

Cork County Council has launched a Cost Rental scheme which aims to provide affordable rented accommodation to people on middle incomes. Applications for the new 2 and 4 bed houses at Baile Adaim, Carrigtwohill will open at 12 noon on Thursday, the 27th of November 2025.

The scheme is aimed at people who do not own a home, are above the threshold for social housing but have difficulty affording private rented accommodation. Cost Rental provides secure tenancy at a rent which is below the market rent in the local area and is also a long-term secure rental option.  This new tenure of rental property is supported by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.

The development of eight newly built, A-rated, family homes is located in a much sought-after residential location in Carrigtwohill. There are six 2 bed mid-terraced houses and two 4 bed semi-detached houses, and the rent is at least 26% below private market rents in the area.

Applications for the scheme will be accepted between 12 noon on the 27th of November 2025 and 12 noon on the 11th of December 2025 via the online application portal on Cork County Council’s website.

Houses will be allocated on a lottery basis to applicants who have submitted all the required documents and who are deemed eligible for the scheme. Renters will enter a tenancy arrangement with Cork County Council.

Further information on this scheme and other upcoming schemes, including the eligibility criteria, guide to making an application and documentation required is also available on our website at the link below.

Cork County Council Launches Climate Initiative ‘Make One Change’

Four people standing in library holding books.

Cork County Council has launched its “Make One Change” campaign for the month of November. With numerous events scheduled across the county, the initiative aims to encourage citizens to adopt simple, yet impactful, practical changes to their lifestyles, helping to act on the climate crisis while building fairer and more sustainable communities. The awareness month follows on from previous successful campaigns in 2022 and 2023 and reflects the Council’s objective to engage with citizens in tackling climate issues articulated in the Council’s Climate Action Plan 2024-29.

To celebrate “Cork County Cuts Carbon” month, there will be climate-themed events and exhibitions taking place in Cork County Council libraries throughout November, ensuring that the library network serves as a hub for environmental education and community action. The campaign features a packed programme, including workshops, talks, presentations, and competitions, all focused on contributing to a sustainable environment for future generations.

Events on topics ranging from fashion to farming highlight how making one small change can contribute to a more sustainable lifestyle. As part of the programme, the talks and workshops being held across the Cork County Council library network will focus on the following core themes:

•    Circular Economy, Shopping and Recycling: Several events are dedicated to tackling consumption and waste.
•    Energy: With the addition of more Home Energy Kits to complement the existing stock, the library will actively promote the benefits of testing your energy consumption. These kits and the promotional materials supplied by Codema will allow users to identify where they can reduce home energy consumption and contribute to a more efficient use of our valuable energy resources.
•    Ecology, Biodiversity, and Green Living: These events are designed to reconnect the community with local ecosystems. Participants can learn about the importance of native flora and fauna and borrow our Wildlife Mini Kits and delve into the fascinating world of local wildlife.
•    Climate Action, Travel and Community Safety: The campaign further highlights innovative climate solutions and community well-being, such as Ireland’s first carbon neutral farm, and Cycle and Pedestrian Safety talks. The creative side of climate action is on show at Macroom Library with a "Rubbish Film Festival” screening on November 19th, showcasing short films on sustainability created by local Transition Year students.
