‘How We Age’ photography competition

Countdown on for entries into the ‘How We Age’

all-island photography competition

19 May 2022

The countdown is on for entries into the ‘How We Age’ all-island photography competition, launched by the Institute of Public Health (IPH) in April.

There are still six weeks left to submit entries into this competition, which hopes to change how older people are portrayed in Ireland and Northern Ireland.

The all-island competition, which is supported by the Irish Photographic Federation (IPF) and Northern Ireland Photographic Association (NIPA), is open for entries until the end of June and has several top prizes on offer.

The ‘How We Age' competition seeks to capture the lived experiences of older people and is seeking images that show older people enjoying life and doing everyday activities.

Under the themes of ‘Staying Active, Staying Social, Staying Connected’, images should portray older people in an authentic and inclusive way - regardless of gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, religion, politics, culture, ability, income, or post code.

The competition is free to enter, open to residents of Ireland and Northern Ireland over the age of 18, and is open for entries until 30 June 2022.

Entrants can submit up to a maximum of three photos and all entries must be submitted via the online entry form on the IPH website, which can be accessed at www.publichealth.ie/photo. Acceptance of terms and conditions is a condition of entry.

Prizes include gift vouchers for photography equipment to the value of €/£500 for first prize, €/£300 for second prize, and €/£100 for third prize, depending on where the winning entrants reside.

From the entries received, IPH intends to create a gallery of stock images for use in its ongoing work to promote healthy ageing and broader public health themes, which may also be made available to partner and allied organisations as a free-to-access image resource.

Details of the winners will be announced in the last week of July and published on the IPH website.

Later in the year, the Institute intends to launch the ‘How We Age’ gallery of selected images to mark International Day of Older Persons on 1 October.

Welcoming the extension of this year’s scheme, Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr. Gillian Coughlan said,

“Cork County Council’s Shop Front Improvement Scheme and Residential Painting Scheme have added great value to local communities, improving the look and feel of our town and village centres.  I’m especially delighted to see the area of this scheme being expanded for 2022 and would encourage eligible business and residential premises owners in Carrigaline Municipal District to apply and utilise the scheme to brighten up our towns and villages.”

The Chair of Carrigaline MD, Cllr. Marcia D’Alton, noted the value that the scheme has brought to the towns and villages in the Municipal District and particularly how the scheme has really brightened up her hometown of Passage West, “adding vivacity, colour and character”.

Cork Harbour Festival 2022

Cork’s largest celebration of maritime culture and heritage returns on June 3-13 with over 50 events in 15 stunning locations throughout Cork City and Cork Harbour.

The varied programme spans on-the-water activities, history, music, art, workshops, talks and walking tours, the environment, and family events. There is truly something for every age and activity level. Sing a sea shanty, view the sea on the moon, learn about marine life or try your hand at foraging for seaweed. Families and children can make a model boat, join a picnic, create Lego art or explore the harbour’s awe-inspiring forts.

Cork Harbour Festival highlights Cork’s rich maritime heritage and culture, as well as the harbour’s wealth of water-based activities, with the flagship Ocean to City- An Rás Mór at the heart of the celebrations.  Taking place at the gateway to Ireland’s Ancient East and the Wild Atlantic Way, Cork is perfectly positioned to deliver the largest harbour festival in Ireland.

Welcoming the launch of the festival, Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr. Gillian Coughlan said, ‘Cork County Council is proud to be a major sponsor of Cork Harbour Festival, which honours and celebrates the unique maritime heritage that is synonymous with Cork. It is fantastic to see the festival return to full form this year following the challenges of the pandemic and we are delighted that our sponsorship of the event, with support from our Economic Development Fund, will help to sustain and grow the event. With festivals being such a key driver of economic growth, Cork Harbour Festival will be another welcome boost for tourism in County Cork.’

Lord Mayor of Cork City, Councillor Colm Kelleher, said: “Cork City Council are thrilled to be a supporter of this year’s Cork Harbour Festival. It is a wonderful event which highlights what’s best about our City, and Cork Harbour in particular, to both City dwellers and Tourists alike. This festival celebrates Cork’s connection with the water, its river and harbour, through both heritage and activities. I would encourage everyone take part in one of the 40 activities laid on”

Festival Manager, Joya Kuin says that: “In Cork, you don’t have to go far to find its maritime connections. Boasting one of the largest natural harbours in the world, maritime strands are interwoven with the fabric of the city’s marine landscapes and architecture, visual and performance arts, outdoor activities and conversations around environment and development. Cork Harbour Festival brings all these connections to the fore, inviting residents and visitors alike to explore and adventure, create, sing and play on land and on water.’’

Ocean to City - An Rás Mór, one of the harbour’s most thrilling events, is back after a two-year hiatus. On Saturday June 4th witness Ireland's premier rowing and paddling event and see hundreds of national and international participants race from Crosshaven to the finish line in Cork City. The flagship event will see everything from currachs, skiffs, longboats, kayaks, and paddle boards with many participants travelling from places like the Netherlands, the United States, and the United Kingdom to compete. There will be spectator vantage points along the harbour, including Cobh and Passage West, with entertainment and festivities both there and at the finish line. Participants can still sign up too with registration open at oceantocity.com.

Full programme is available at corkharbourfestival.com.

Applications Open for the All-Ireland Heritage Skills Programme

Applications have opened for The All-Ireland Heritage Skills Programme, a course which aims to preserve heritage building skills that are at risk of being lost by supporting those already working in the construction sector to push their skills to the next level.

Developed by The Prince’s Foundation in partnership with the Heritage Council in the Republic of Ireland and the Historic Environment Division of Northern Ireland’s Department for Communities, the programme will benefit aspiring craftspeople from both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. It is supported by Benefact Trust, one of the UK’s largest grant-making charities.

The course will begin in July and has been specifically developed to meet the demand for upskilling in heritage building skills in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Successful applicants will have the opportunity to spend 12 months engaging in collaborative learning experiences while honing their heritage craft skills and gaining invaluable experience working on historic sites. It will help preserve skills that are at risk of being lost such as traditional carpentry, lime work, thatching, blacksmithing, and stonemasonry. To ensure it is accessible to all, successful applicants will be awarded a full scholarship and will be provided with a monthly bursary to help cover the cost of travel and accommodation.

Ben McCabe, All-Ireland Heritage Skills Programme Coordinator for The Prince’s Foundation, said: “All of the partners involved in The All-Ireland Heritage Skills Programme believe that it is crucial to preserve the wisdom and knowledge that embodies many of the heritage building skills that have shaped our historic built environment. As many workers in the sector now reach retirement age, it is vital that these skills are passed on to the next generation of craftspeople to ensure that we can continue to restore and conserve our history, and demonstrate the significant role that these skills can play in creating new spaces and places.

“The programme is aimed at those with quantifiable experience in craft areas such as stonemasonry, carpentry and joinery, bricklaying, blacksmithing, plastering, thatching, roofing and tiling, painting and decorating. The ideal applicants will have an interest in developing their craft with a focus towards heritage methods.”

Virginia Teehan, Chief Executive of The Heritage Council, said: “The All-Ireland Heritage Skills Programme is a showcase project with immense potential. It promises to develop the skills of our craftspeople, allowing them valuable time ‘on the tools’ and gaining an appreciation of drawing and conservation principles, not only broadening their career prospects as specialists in the conservation sector but benefiting society by helping to preserve our traditional heritage crafts. The multi-jurisdictional  nature of this collaboration is important as it provides an opportunity to share ideas with and learn from our partners, and gives course participants the opportunity to share ideas, skills and perspectives with people from a variety of backgrounds.”

Paul Playford, Grants Officer for Benefact Trust, said: “We are delighted to support the All-Ireland Heritage Skills Programme which will expand heritage craft skills training into Ireland. The programme will help to ensure that at-risk traditional skills can continue for generations to come, and it will support talented craftspeople to grow and develop their skills which is an investment in the future of the heritage sector.”

Iain Greenway, Director of Historic Environment Division in the Department for Communities, said: “The increase in heritage craftspeople is one of our key objectives as we seek to help communities understand and realise the value of our historic environment. These skills are essential for completing works to heritage assets in ways that preserve their special character and make them central to the enjoyment of places by residents and visitors. The skills will become of increasing importance as emission reduction targets require greater reuse of existing buildings. I am therefore delighted that we are able to play a key role in the All-Ireland Heritage Skills Programme, including at the NI Heritage Skills Centre in Moira.”

Applications for The All-Ireland Heritage Skills Programme are open until 12pm on Monday 23 May 2022. To apply, or to find out more, visit https://princes-foundation.org/education/all-ireland-programme.
