The Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr Danny Collins visited both Bantry and Fermoy E-Centre Remote Working Hubs following their expansion and refurbishment. These upgraded facilities offer a modern and comfortable working environment for remote workers thanks to grant funding received from the Department of Rural and Community Development under the Connected Hubs grant scheme.
Bantry E-Centre has been in operation for over 10 years offering hot-desking space, meeting/training rooms, third level study space, office and canteen facilities. As part of the refurbishment, the E-Centre has benefitted from energy and connectivity upgrades, including the installation of air-to-air heat pumps and heat recovery ventilation, upgraded LED lighting and installation of high speed 1GB broadband. Furthermore, the centre now features a newly created 3rd level remote study facility with seven desk spaces connected to the Eduroam system, enabling secure internet access for students, researchers, and staff from participating institutions.
Similarly, Fermoy E-Centre has been in operation for over a decade and has been enhanced to better meet the needs of the new remote working environment. The thriving centre, which previously offered 5 offices for rent, 11 hot-desks, a meeting / training room and canteen facilities, has been reconfigured to create an additional 15 desks which can be used as either hot-desks or offices. Refurbishment also included the installation of 1GB broadband as well as energy efficient panel heaters, a heat recovery ventilation system and upgraded LED lighting.
The upgrades allow for a more energy efficient systems, complete with the ability to manage the heating remotely, allowing for reduced energy usage and a more comfortable working environment for tenants.

Lord Mayor welcomes handover of Famine Graveyard to Cork City Council
21st June 2023
The All Saints Cemetery is known to many local people as ‘The Pauper’s Graveyard.’ It is a national monument and an annual commemoration ceremony is held in the cemetery in September of each year.
Commenting on the event, the Lord Mayor said “I look forward to seeing the plans for maintaining, interpreting and honouring this significant site in our history. Today marks a new opportunity to remember our ancestors who died in An Gorta Mór – The Great Famine.”
All Saints Cemetery was used as a burial ground for victims of the Great Famine and paupers, and was in use as a burial ground up until the 1950s by which time it became the final resting place for around 30,000 souls. Thousands of Cork people who died during The Great Famine are buried at Carr’s Hill. In the months of February to June 1847, 2,260 famine victims from the Workhouse on Douglas Road (now St Finbarr’s Hospital) were laid to rest in these grounds.
The late Jack Sorensen, a taxi driver in Cork, erected a cross to honour the famine dead back in 1958 which is still located on the graveyard site. Jack passed away in 1979 but his legacy lives on through a memorial carrying his name at the foot of the cross. The US Ambassador to Ireland, Mrs. Jean Kennedy Smith, unveiled a memorial to the famine victims here in this cemetery back in 1997. This was to mark the 150th anniversary of the Famine in Ireland.

The principal duties of the Treasurer are to:
1. Ensure that adequate records exist regarding the Branchs financial transactions
including accurate and up-to-date records of all income, expenditure, assets and liabilities.
2. Issue receipts for all funds received, where appropriate.
3. Lodge all monies received in the Branchs bank account.

8. Forward details of all income, expenditure, assets and liabilities to the Branchs auditor in early January in relation to Branch Annual Meeting.
9. Forward a copy of the audited accounts to the Finance Department for consolidation into MSI’s accounts by the designated date.

The Competition is in its eleventh year after a brief halt during covid and this year saw a record amount of entries. The enthusiasm and high standard and quality shown from all the schools proved to the Judges that the project continues to be a huge success. The competition involves each school developing/planning a garden in their own way. Both adults and students work together to decide what type of garden they want to create. The competition encourages all students to get involved in working in the garden and the competition also promotes sustainability and biodiversity.
Mr Denis Kelly welcomed the schools involved and congratulated each school on
their efforts. This was then followed by an audio visual presentation that showcased
all of the schools hard work. Denis then thanked the Muintir ná Tíre sub group for
all their hard work in making the School Garden’s Awards a huge success. He
also thanked Cork County & Cork City Council for their huge support.
Sean Holland Chair of the sub group of Cork County Federation Muintir ná Tíre was
highly impressed with the standard of the gardens entered and spoke about the
importance of getting into the garden and “getting your hands dirty.” He asked
pupils to think outside the box and to include lots of colour in their gardens.
He also thought that the Video on the gardens was a good way for new entrants
to see other school’s work and come up with new ideas.
Mayor
Danny Collins was highly impressed with the enthusiasm
from the children towards the School Garden Awards and encouraged everyone to get
involved. He congratulated all the schools and said they were all winners &
what they were learning now will stand to them in time. He hoped next year’s
competition would be even bigger and better. Cllr Derry Canty who deputised for the Lord Mayor of Cork City Cllr.
Deirdre Forde wished these initiatives
were in schools in his day & commended the work of everyone involved to
keep the school gardens competitions going while congratulating all the
students who got involved. Sean
Finn of Muntir Cork praised all the support received & thanked the
sponsors while commending the hard work of the committee and staff of Muintir
Cork. Conor Nelligan Heritage Officer of
Cork County Council thanked everyone for partaking and attending the Awards
Ceremony. He said the competition was a huge success and congratulated all
involved. Brendan Scahill HSE & Yvonne
Cahalane of Muntir Cork were highly impressed with the commitment of all
the pupils & post covid believed their gardens would benefit all schools by
getting out and enjoying the garden, while building confidence & life
skills.
