Mayor of the County of County, Cllr. Frank O’Flynn has paid tribute to the students and teachers of Muinefliuch National School, Macroom, who sowed the seeds to victory winning the Overall Best County School Garden in the Muintir na Tire Cork School Garden Competition 2024.

Co-sponsored by Cork County Council, the annual Cork Schools Garden competition is open to all primary schools in Cork County and City who have a school garden or are in the process of developing one.

Speaking at the Muintir na Tíre Cork School Garden Awards at Cork County Hall, Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr. Frank O’Flynn said “I am extremely impressed with the work being done in the Primary Schools that entered the Cork School Garden competition this year. I want to congratulate all thirty- three schools who entered, as well as the commitment and dedication of the principals, teachers, SNA’s, parents, and others involved in helping develop the gardens. I hope next year’s competition will be even bigger.”

Sean Holland is Chair of the Muintir na Tíre committee and has been organising the competition since 2012, he added “The Muintir na Tíre Cork School Garden Competition continues to be immensely popular with schools all over the county. The standard is extremely high, with every year reaching new levels of creativity, ingenuity, and biodiversity. I want to thank all thirty-three schools from all over the county from Youghal to Derinagree and from Curraglass to Skibbereen for getting involved and stuck in”.

This year’s competition saw many gardens big and small, new and established, each one unique. Students used their knowledge and awareness to create incredible, friendly, functional, biodiverse spaces that help conserve local and native plant and animal species, as well as demonstrating their keen ability to rethink, repair, refurbish, reuse, recycle and upcycle items to bring their gardens to life, reducing CO2 emissions and reducing wastage going to landfills.

Lord Mayor of Cork Cllr Kieran Mc Carthy pays tribute to St. Columba’s Girls National School for winning the Overall Best City School Garden in the Muintir na Tire Cork School Garden Competition 2024.

Speaking at the Muintir na Tire Cork School Garden Awards in Cork County Hall Cllr McCarthy said “I am impressed with the work being pursued in primary schools who enter the Cork School Garden competition. They are all winners and what they are learning now will stand to them in time. I congratulate all the schools who entered in 2024.

I am delighted that schools are teaching children how to grow vegetables, fruit, and flowers, which is a skill they will never forget and is also an important climate action piece. I praise the commitment and dedication of the principals, teachers, SNA’s, Parents, and others involved in helping develop the gardens".

Ellen Murphy, Executive Scientist Cork City Council expressed her delight that biodiversity is now a major feature of most gardens entering the competition. She added that schools by allowing a patch of nettles to colonise a small corner of school garden, schools are providing food for the larvae (caterpillars) of once-common butterflies all of which lay their eggs on its leaves.  Even a narrow ribbon of lawn left to grow uncut is helping the butterflies, which depend upon various native grasses as a source of food for their larvae. Upcycling in the garden was especially important as it helps lessen the amount of waste going into landfills and reduce CO2 emissions by using old materials instead of new ones. She said Schools in the competition are encouraged to rethink, repair, refurbish along with reusing & recycling items. She said she was delighted that Colour and Art is now a feature of most gardens and commended the use of recycled materials in making this.

Mr Sean Holland Chair of Cork Muintir na Tire committee who organise the competition, which has been running since 2012 continues to be immensely popular with schools all over the county. He said the standard is extremely high and he thanked all the schools in the city that entered in 2024

He said ‘We saw many gardens, big and small, new, and established. each one unique’ He added that the children were amazing, welcoming, and eager to show off their garden and tell us about what they had done and learned’

Mayor O’Flynn Launches Grant for Irish Language Events and Initiatives 2024

An image of a crowd in a library

Cork County Council has launched its Irish Language Events and Initiatives Grant Scheme for 2024.  This is the second year of this scheme, which was initially launched in 2023, when 11 recipients from all parts of the county were successful in receiving funding.

Events such as research projects, an Irish language-based conference, community family fun days with entertainment and events through Irish, as well as musical, singing and cultural events were among the successful recipients last year.

The aim of the scheme is to provide financial aid for Irish language events, projects, and initiatives within the County of Cork. The scheme supports projects that utilise and promote the Irish language, including festivals, concerts, family event days, films, plays, or any art form that celebrates and encourages the use of Irish.

The maximum amount granted for any event is €1,500 under this scheme, and the ability by the organisation in question to match funding is required. Organisations may apply for more than one event within the application period, and these will be considered subject to availability of funding and the initiative meeting the grant criteria.

This scheme is open to applications until close of business on Monday the 1st of July 2024.

To apply, print and fill in the form below and return to the Irish Officer at gaeilge@corkcoco.ie

Significant Funding Secured for Two West Cork Towns

Cork County Council has been granted more than €2 million in funding to revitalise the town centres of Skibbereen and Clonakilty.

Skibbereen has been awarded €1.8 million for public realm enhancement under the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund (RRDF). The money will be used to reanimate the streetscape in Skibbereen town centre and install a new wayfinding scheme to make it easier for visitors and residents to navigate around the town.

The Skibbereen works include the paving of footpaths, urban greening, accessible street furniture, undergrounding cables and new street lighting. It also includes plans for a new raised paved area which will function both as a social seating area and an area for community and cultural events at Levis Quay and The Bridge area.

Clonakilty is set to benefit from €200,000 under THRIVE, the Town Centre First Heritage Revival Scheme which allows Local Authorities and citizens to reimagine town centres though the renovation and reuse of publicly owned vacant or derelict heritage buildings.

The funds will be used to develop an integrated urban strategy for the council owned buildings and lands on Kent Street, a richly historical street in the heart of Clonakilty. Cork County Council own a number of properties on the street and will work with the local community to develop the strategy.

Skibbereen was identified as a ‘pathfinder town’ under the national Town Centre First initiative and a regeneration plan has been developed by Cork County Council in partnership with local stakeholders and the dedicated Town Team. The plan outlines 35 objectives to regenerate the town centre as a viable, vibrant and attractive location for people to live, work and visit, while also improving its capacity to function as the service, social, cultural and recreational hub for the local community.

The RRDF funding directly supports 11 of the objectives and includes substantial public realm improvements to transform the fabric of the town, to support accessibility and sustainable travel and to complement other initiatives being undertaken by Cork County Council in the town.

THRIVE is co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union under the Southern, Eastern and Midland Regional Programme 2021-2027 and the Northern and Western Regional Programme 2021-2027.  Cork County Council will strive to promote the values and working principles of the New European Bauhaus – an initiative of the European Union – in their strategies and projects to ensure these projects are sustainable, aesthetically pleasing, inclusive and accessible.

Elected members and staff of Cork County Council holding 2 signs, one saying "Town Centre First" and the other saying "Kanturk2.

Representatives from a range of local community and business groups attended an information evening to mark the first steps towards a Town Centre Regeneration Plan for Kanturk. The inaugural event offered over 40 community stakeholders in attendance the opportunity to meet with staff from Cork County Council’s Town Regeneration Office and to find out how to get involved.

Cork County Council will develop the regeneration plan in consultation with residents and business owners in the town, as well as with the wider community who visit the town regularly. The next step is a general survey of the Kanturk community that will help to guide the development of the plan. The survey will be made available on the Council’s website and at Kanturk Library over the coming weeks.

New Guide to Researching and Writing Local History Launched in North Cork

iCan Network Meeting - Launch of 'The possession of his every neighbour - A Guide to Researching and Writing Local History' by Tomás Mac Conmara at the iCan Network Meeting in Springford Hall Hotel, Mallow.

Cork County Council’s Heritage Office joined with Kilshannig Heritage Society to host the annual gathering of the Irish Community Archive Network (iCAN) at Springfort Hall Country House Hotel, where a new publication by oral historian and author, Dr Tomás Mac Conmara was officially launched.

‘The possession of his every neighbour’: a guide to researching and writing Local History’ aims to encourage, support, and strengthen good practice in the way local history research is conducted and presented. The publication explores local historical research across eight separate sections, including a glossary of keywords, research tips and examples.

The guide was developed in response to the unprecedented increase in local history research across the country, as well as the proliferation of local history and heritage societies, journals, publications and websites over the last fifteen years. It aims to positively support these activities by providing straightforward guidance to ensure that this primarily volunteer-led effort makes the best possible impact on the local community it relates to, as well as the broader public.

Author Tomás Mac Conmara, who has written several publications on the memory of the Irish revolutionary period, spoke at the publication’s launch about the importance of local history enthusiasts, “I have been very aware for many years of the great work undertaken across the country by volunteers who are deeply committed to the heritage of their place and who give countless hours to recording and preserving their historical landscape. The intention of the book is to provide support to this effort and to, where helpful, offer guidance on the methods and approaches that are optimal in researching and writing about our past.  Those connected to the communities they live in are often the best to explore and understand that landscape. I believe in the work of iCAN and can see the positive effect it has had for people and groups across the country. I will be very proud if this publication can provide some further support to this wonderful work.”

iCAN supports its members by providing training, guidance and support in addition to a secure digital platform where they can document and share their valuable local collections, research and articles. Collections on the iCAN Community Archives also include photographs, documents, videos, and oral recordings, ensuring that the rich heritage of our localities is accessible to people both at home and abroad. iCAN commissioned the guide primarily to support the work of its member groups across the country but hopes that it will have a broader application for those engaged in these activities.

Lorna Elms, iCAN Development Officer, National Museum of Ireland emphasised, that “It is important to acknowledge the community volunteers across Ireland working tirelessly and with a passion, to gather, preserve and make accessible their local history – without them our ability to better understand the nuances of our past and how it has shaped our Irish identity, would be severely hampered. We hope that this complete and accessible guide will become a must have handbook for those engaged in the practice of Local History.”

The book will be available through branches of Cork County Council’s Library Service or digital copies can be requested from ican@museum.ie
