Exhibition Celebrating our Clothing Heritage Opens at Kinsale Library
Treasured clothing traditions from the past, including the Kinsale Cloak and a variety of pieces from the Mizen Spinning and Textile Group will be on display, as well as tools such as spinning wheels and looms. Visitors will also discover a range of historical photographs, personal stories and handcrafted items, alongside insights from primary school children on sustainable living.
Welcoming the exhibition, Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr. Joe Carroll says, “We hope this unique presentation encourages visitors to reflect on how past generations valued quality over quantity and how their practices can inspire us to change how we produce and consume clothing. Whether through repairing, or choosing renewable materials, we can learn from the past to make better choices for our future.”
Supported by Creative Ireland, ‘A Stitch in Time: The Clothes We Wore, The Future We Weave’ is the culmination of a series of workshops led by Cork County Council’s Heritage Specialist in Residence Shannon Forde. Held in local libraries and primary schools, the workshops explored themes of heritage and sustainability, focusing on crafts, transport and food to uncover the ways in which our ancestors were living sustainably.
This exhibition opens in Kinsale Library on the 17th of April and runs until the 13th of May. Kinsale Library is open Tuesday to Saturday from 9.30am to 5.30pm

Historic Structures Fund Grant for Kinsale Museum
Cork County Council has been awarded more than €72,000 for the repair and protection of Kinsale Museum through the Historic Structures Fund.
The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage’s National Built Heritage Service (NBHS) funding will be used to carry out repairs to internal plaster, external ironmongery, masonry walls and drainage of the iconic building. The clock on the front elevation will also be repaired to bring it back into use.
Kinsale Museum is located in the 400-year-old former market house and courthouse on Market Street in the centre of the town. Built in 1610 and serving as a courthouse from 1705, it went on to hold the inquest into the 1915 sinking of the HMS Lusitania.
The mixture of materials used in the museum’s front facade adds textural variation whilst enlivening the appearance of the building. The structure is enhanced by the retention of features such as the clock and cupola. The profile and location of the building make it vulnerable to storm damage and the proposed works will build resilience to enable it to withstand these effects.
The Cork County Council owned and operated museum is dedicated to telling the history of Kinsale and the surrounding area, covering important national and international events such as the 1601 Battle of Kinsale and the sinking of the Lusitania. The museum also explores local maritime history and the curious story of the Kinsale Giant.
Kinsale Museum is open from 10am to 5pm Tuesday to Saturday in the summer season (1st April to 31st October) and Wednesday to Saturday in the winter season (1st November to 31st March).

County Cork’s Top Innovators Selected for National Enterprise Awards
Two emerging Cork-based businesses, supported by Cork County Council’s Local Enterprise Offices (LEO), have progressed to the finals of the National Enterprise Awards. ‘Breakthrough Maths’ and ‘HappyPath Labs Ltd.’ will go on compete against 29 other businesses for a share of the €35,000 winner’s prize fund.
Representing LEO South Cork, Breakthrough Maths Limited was founded by TJ Hegarty. The company delivers online maths tutoring for primary and secondary students. Since 2020, Breakthrough Maths has grown from eight students to over 2,000 each week. The custom-built platform tracks student progress to personalise learning, ensuring every student gets the support they need. The company is planning to expand its operations to the UK and the US in the coming year.
Representing LEO Cork North & West, HappyPath Labs develops advanced software solutions that enhance customer service operations. The Clonakilty based company specialises in AI-powered analytics and scalable customer contact technology, helping businesses streamline their customer interactions and improve response times. Founded by Gavin Coakley, David Hayes, and Denis McCarthy, HappyPath Labs started as a team of three and has grown to eight employees, with plans to expand to 15 in the next two years.
Commenting on the award, TJ Hegarty of Breakthrough Maths said, “Since the beginning our goal has always been to provide high-quality, accessible maths education for students of all abilities. The support from LEO South Cork has been integral to our growth, from mentoring to funding opportunities, they have supported us to scale and expand our services. We are thrilled to represent our region at the national awards.”
Gavin Coakley of HappyPath Labs Ltd. said, "At HappyPath Labs, we're all about using smart technology to make customer service smoother and more efficient. With the support of the LEO Cork North and West we have been able to expand on our initial vision to bring in new talent and extend our reach. Winning this award is a huge moment for us. It shows how far we've come, but also how much more we can achieve. The future is full of opportunity, and we're excited to see where it takes us.”
Last year, Cork County Council’s LEO offices in South Cork and Cork North & West approved grants totalling over €2 million to assist local businesses. Further details about the supports available to start-ups and small businesses can be found at www.localenterprise.ie
