Final hours left to apply for the SE Systems Community Fund

Applications Close this Friday at Midnight

This is your final reminder: the application window for the SE Systems Community Fund closes in just 48 hours. From - Friday, 18th July at midnight, we will no longer be accepting applications.

This fund was created to support not-for-profit organisations across Ireland in making energy-efficient upgrades - helping them to reduce running costs, improve comfort, and reinvest more into the communities they serve. Supports can cover a wide range of improvements such as installing solar PV panels, upgrading insulation, fitting energy-efficient heat pumps for heating, replacing windows and doors, or adding energy monitoring systems to better manage energy usage.

If you know of any eligible groups who may still be considering applying, now is the time to give them a nudge. A quick forward could be the reason they get the support they need.

Thank you for helping ensure this opportunity reaches those who need it most.

Mind Your Head Training

We are happy to announce we will be running a Mind Your Head Training Day on the 11th of September 2025. This training is suitable for professionals who work with young people in formal, non-formal & informal settings.

What is the Mind Your Head Programme?

Mind Your Head is a Resource for Exploring Mental Health Issues with Young People. The ‘Mind Your Head’ programme originated from a need recognised by the Youth & Community services in Gurranabraher, (on the Northside of Cork city), where issues around mental health and self-harm had been brought up by young people attending the services in the area. This programme was written and compiled by a youth worker and a community health worker. This is a resource for exploring mental health issues with young people. It is designed specifically for youth workers, youth leaders, peer educators, and others working with young people. It is made in an accessible format that we hope makes it easy to use and photocopy. The programme is very much about giving the young people space and time to explore and talk about their concerns and opinions on mental health. It also highlights tools and supports to help them cope and deal with issues that can have a negative effect on their mental health. The programme was created with a moderate to low budget as this allows others to follow our programme session by session without needing major funding to do so. The information, activities and exercises used come from a variety of sources and various training days. We hope the layout of the session plans and the style used make them accessible and easy for Youth Workers and others to use. The contents of this resource have been largely informed by the young people we have worked with. Their feedback has influenced and shaped the current programme. Evaluations will continue after each group completes the programme and these will be used to influence the further development of the programme.

What is the Living Well Programme?

The Living Well Programme is a free, 6–week, group self-management programme for adults with chronic or long-term health conditions. The programme supports people to develop the skills and confidence to live well with their health condition. The programme focuses on developing and enhancing confidence and self-management skills. It complements clinical treatment and other patient education programmes.

It is an evidence-based self-management programme originally developed at Stanford University and you can read the ‘Report on the Impact of the HSE Living Well Programme’ here.

The workshops are delivered in a relaxed and friendly way. Participants share experiences of living with a long-term health condition(s).

Each person who takes part gets a book about self-management.

People can sign up themselves or can be referred by a healthcare professional.

Who can join the Living Well programme?

Tall Ship Adventure for Disabled Young People Across Ireland

 Image_2025-07-18_11-23-46

Sail Training Ireland for Youth Development are thrilled to  announce that they are now taking applications for their "Sea Change for All” voyages taking place in late September and early October this year.

These voyages places are exclusively for young people aged between 14 – 30 who have a disability of some kind and their buddies (carers) if required.

This opportunity sees the participants become part of the working crew as trainees on the Tall Ship Pelican of London on a weeklong voyage at sea. Potential participants should be aware that this will be a challenging but fun adventure.

The itinerary of the trips are weather dependent but will include a visit to the UK or Isle of Man.

They are able to make this opportunity available as a result of Sail Training Ireland being one of the awardees of the Disability Participation and Awareness Fund 3.0! A big thank you to Rethink Ireland and the Department of Children, Disability and Equality.

Inclusion and providing the sail training opportunity to young people of all abilities has always been a key pillar of what Sail Training Ireland do. They aim to have at least 10% of places available for those with a disability. This figure was 30% and 19% in the last two years. They have done this without any specific funding for disability work. Sail Training Ireland for Youth Development are thrilled to receive this funding, which will go towards getting more young people out on their amazing self-development training programmes on tall ships.

Details of the voyages are:

Support group launch, social club outings, hydration and Lewy Body dementia survey

Hydration

The recommended amount of fluid intake is one and a half to two
litres a day, which is around eight to 10 glasses or 10 to 13 cups per
day. More fluid may be needed on hot days.
How can dementia affect drinking?
As people get older the sensation of thirst may change. This can mean they don’t feel thirsty even
though they’re not drinking enough. Someone with dementia may experience similar changes. They may
forget to drink, be less able to get themselves a drink or be unable to communicate that they are thirsty.
This can cause dehydration which can lead to headaches, increased confusion, urinary tract infections
and constipation. These can make the symptoms of dementia worse.
Placing a drink in front of someone doesn’t always mean they will drink it. An empty cup doesn’t always
mean that the person has finished the drink. It may have been spilled, drunk by someone else, or poured
away.
If you have dementia:
Try filling a jug in the morning, leave it somewhere visible and try to have finished the content of
it by a particular time (eg. lunchtime).
If this doesn’t work, write down what you are drinking if that helps or use a ‘drink and tick’ chart
Aim to get your main hydration from water but squashes, tea, coffees, milk and juice all count
Hydration can come from foods too – sorbets, soups, fruit
A smart hydration reminder (Ulla) can be used- see www.ulla.io. Can be purchased on
www.murrays.ie or Amazon
If you are supporting someone with dementia :
Offer small amounts of fluids regularly throughout the day
Have a drink on hand whenever the person is eating
Use a clear glass so the person can see what’s inside, or try a brightly coloured cup to draw
attention instead. Put it where they can see it clearly.
Offer different types of drink throughout the day such as tea, coffee, milky drinks, fruit juice or
smoothies, soup, squash and water.
Make sure the cup or glass is suitable – not too heavy or a difficult shape.
If the person is saying no when you offer them a drink:
Try leaving drinks in visible locations throughout the house so they can take them whenever they
wish
Have a drink with the person as they might be more inclined to drink with somebody
Offer foods that have a high liquid content, such as ice lollies, milk, jellies and yoghurt.
