Launch of Cork County School Garden Book

The new illustrated publication by Dr. Mary Stack showing the wonderful work being undertaken by pupils and teachers  in school gardens  across County Cork 
For many years Muintir na Tire, Cork County Council and Griffins Garden Centre Dripsey have come together to organise a most wonderful school garden competition for Primary schools in County Cork. To see the unbelievable work being undertaken by  many schools is indeed a pleasure and a joy to behold. The work that pupils teachers parents and others are doing is absolutely wonderful and needs to be seen by everyone interested in every type of gardening and the environment.
So much so that Cork County Council have produced a wonderful publication called the The Cork County Pride in our Community – School Gardens Book. 

 The book was launched this week by the deputy Mayor of County Cork Councillor Frank O'Flynn in the presence of elected representatives, county council staff and community organisations from all over the County

Speaking at the launch the author Dr. Mary Stack Environmental Awareness Officer for Cork County Council said  'I am privileged to visit primary schools in the county and inspired by the many wonderful environmental initiatives they undertake. One such initiative is our School Gardens Competition, run by Cork County Federation of Muintir na Tíre and assisted by expert gardening advisors at Griffins Garden Centre in Dripsey, Co. Cork. The competition is also supported by the Heritage Unit of Cork County Council. Launched in 2014, each year the competition attracts numerous entries from national schools throughout the County. Environmental education initiatives such as Pride in our Community – School Gardens Competition enable pupils in Cork County: • To develop and apply their knowledge and skills in protecting, conserving and improving their school’s environment. • Provides them with an opportunity to express a positive attitude to their use of the earth’s precious resources. • Teaches sustainable lifestyle skills through the use of natural materials and the reuse of old materials. • Learn a new way of living that will help shape how future human behaviour will impact on the planet.
Promoting environmental education initiatives in schools provides an important educational tool for pupils – tomorrow’s scientists, architects, planners, builders, engineers, farmers, teachers and much more – our future leaders. Highlighting the many projects and the pupils’ creations from the Pride in our Community – School Gardens Competition, we hope schools will learn and be inspired by each other'

 Mr Denis Kelly of Muintir na Tire said 'Cork County Federation of Muintir na Tíre administers the Pride in our Community – School Gardens Competition, in partnership with Cork County Council’s Environmental Awareness & Research Unit and the Heritage Unit and Griffins Garden Centre. The aim of our competition is to support pupils and teachers in County Cork, in bringing nature, wildlife, plants and colours into their school grounds. It also promotes horticulture and biodiversity and gives students a chance to interact with the environment and nature in a positive way. Through the competition, we are asking you to tell us about your school garden and all its elements. Taking part in the Pride in our Community – School Gardens Competition is of great benefit to schools working on other environmental projects, by giving them an opportunity to put ideas into practice by: • allowing them create objects and structures inspired by their reuse or upcycling of old objects, • encouraging their ideas for promoting biodiversity and protecting habitats, • supporting sustainable living practices, • supporting climate change initiatives.

Community Groups invited to participate in Culture Night this year

We would like to invite more community and voluntary groups to participate in Culture Night this year, and we are keen to place an emphasis on social inclusion.

You can find information on what Culture Night is about at www.culturenightcorkcounty.ie/information and there is information on participating below . Participating in Culture Night is a great opportunity to reach a wider audience and promote the work you do. Events can range from something as simple as hosting a story-telling event or organising an exhibition, to more complex events such as concerts, dance performances or parades, all of which reflect the diversity of culture in County Cork. 


To participate in Culture Night events must be free of charge and open to the public after 5pm.

Boundary Extension - Muintir has Serious Concerns.

Proposed area for City Expansion 
The board of Cork County Federation Muintir na Tire expressed serious concerns about the McKinnon report which recommends that the boundary of Cork City Council be extended to include Ballincollig, Carrigrohane, Blarney, Glanmire, Carrigtwohil and Cork Airport.

Muintir na Tire  suggest that serious questions need to be answered about the report.
These include:
What is the legal status of the report  given that a there is already in place a Statutory report (Smiddy Report) since 2015?

Why did they not see that the implementation of this large scale Boundary extension has the potential to create a mortally weakened County which in turn will hit our Town and village communities who have immense pride and attachment to their areas?

Why is McKinnon report is vague on many issues including the exact form the proposed city boundary will take?

Why  is it  not specific on who will finally determine where the proposed city boundary will be?

Will the natural rural townlands of  the areas suggested be cut off and isolated from their development?

How can this report not be seen as an attack on Rural Cork if it will have a severe impact on development in rural communities?

Muintir na Tire in Cork will be organising Town and Village Hall Meetings in conjunction with local community groups to get answers to some of these and other questions about this report.
