"Unfair Game" nature protection event Macroom 17 October

Macroom and District Environmental Group (MDEG) are hosting a public demonstration outside Macroom Town Hall at 2pm on Saturday, 17th October, to launch our petition to remove rare and endangered bird species from the open-season hunting list. This is planned to be a family-friendly event featuring live music, characters dressed as red-listed birds and other fauna, and public speakers including Ted Cook (MDEG member and Heritage Specialist) as well as other local environmentalists.

Hunting of red-listed species such as Golden Plover, Snipe, Woodcock, Red Grouse and Shoveler is legally permitted by granting of licence from the National Parks and Wildlife Service during the open season, as well as amber-listed species such as Tufted Duck, Mallard, Teal, Gadwall, Wigeon, and Greylag Goose. Our petition, addressed to Minister Christopher O’Sullivan, calls for these sensitive species, already struggling with habitat loss and climate change, to be taken off the open season list.
The petition can be viewed at:

We look forward to seeing you at what promises to be an engaging and inspiring event.

Kind regards
Donal O’ Leary
On behalf of Macroom District Environmental Group
