EirGrid is the state-owned electricity transmission system operator. They are responsible for the electricity grid.
Eirgrid are exploring the feasibility of an electrical link between Ireland and France, called the Celtic Interconnector, with their counterparts in France, Réseau de Transport d'Électricité (RTE). If built this project would enable the movement of electricity between the two countries and provide Ireland’s first direct energy link to continental Europe. At this stage no decision has been made to build the project, but Eirgrid are continuing to assess its feasibility. Based on various assessments of the onshore and offshore environment, the most suitable connection points for the Celtic Interconnector have been identified as East Cork, in Ireland and Brittany, in France.
