Carrigaline Pollinator 2017
Carrigaline Tidy Towns receiving a Regional Pollinator Award in Dublin 2017

The Local Authority Pollinator award, a special award in the national Tidy Towns competition, in partnership with the National Biodiversity Data Centre (NBDC), is in its 3rd year. In 2017 the award nationally saw 70 entrants, including many from the County of Cork, with Carrigaline Tidy Towns doing the County proud, winning a Regional Pollinator Award. Kildorrery in North Cork also saw regional success in 2016 and it is nice to see the wonderful work of groups in County Cork recognised at the National Level, particularly in the National Tidy Towns Competition which sees close to 900 towns and villages compete nationally each year.

The 2018 Local Authority Pollinator Award which is supported by a number of Local Authorities throughout the Country, including Cork County Council, is now accepting applications. The application form is available for download via and the closing date for entries is 23rd May 2018 (same as for national TT competition).

In order to support TT groups who enter the award, a very useful newsletter providing hints and tips has been put together which also highlights good examples from the 2017 entries. This newsletter is available on Cork County Council’s Heritage website – here.

The NBDC also has produced some other useful resources including

• lists of pollinator friendly plants• signage for TT groups participating in the award, for areas managed for pollinators
It is hoped that many of County Cork’s Tidy Towns Groups get involved again in the competition and the Local Authority Pollinator Award in 2018.
