Additional Information: This lecture will examine the General Election of 1918 which has been described as both a turning point in Irish history and as a referendum on Irish independence. It will look at this election campaign and its aftermath from a Cork perspective, recounting the stories of local men and women, some of whom are well known and some less so. Dr Aodh Quinlivan is a political scientist who lectures in the Department of Government and Politics at University College Cork. His specialist area is local government and he is the Director of the Centre for Local and Regional Governance. He is the author of six books, the most recently published of which was ‘Dissolved: The Remarkable Story of how Cork lost its Corporation in 1924’ (October 2017). He has two books due to be published in 2019. He lives in Kilmurry with his wife Emmanuelle and three children. The event has been organised by Clonakilty Dúchas Heritage and all welcome to attend.
