Public libraries across the Country are due to begin offering more services to the public as outlined in Phase 2 of the Government’s Road-map for Reopening Society and Business. Although it will be some time before full library service can resume, the first step in this process is the introduction of a Book Collection Service.

Cork County Library and Arts Service will be operating a safe lending service of books with a ‘Contact and Collect’ system. The library book request service is available online on www.yourcouncil.ie. Initially this will be a pre-arranged collection service only. Cork County Council has established rigorous safety protocols to ensure public and staff health and safety in the provision of this service.

Chief Executive of Cork County Council Tim Lucey welcomed the move saying, “Our libraries are at the centre of communities and have been at the forefront of the Community Support response across the County. The Housebound delivery service continues for citizens who are cocooning. Cork County Library’s wide range of online services and resources, digitised local history collections, e-books and e-magazines have been much utilised in recent months and the housebound delivery service of books and music to people cocooning has been immensely valuable. With the progression of the Government Roadmap we look forward to a gradual re-opening of our libraries in line with health and safety directives. I’m sure this next step in that direction will be welcome news to many.”

To arrange a book collection from your local library, simply contact your local branch by phone or by completing a form online or by emailing bookcollection@corkcoco.ie.

Using the online form here you cab request specific titles or detail your reading interests and library staff will help you with recommendations.

Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr Ian Doyle asks that people contact their library in advance and not visit the library without prior arrangement saying, “The health and safety of library users and staff is paramount. Social distancing will be observed and health and safety protocols are in place. Please don’t visit your library until staff contact you with a collection date and time slot and where possible only one person should come to collect books. Library staff will meet your reading needs as best as possible with available stock and are happy to give recommendations or you can have a look at your local library window for ideas. My thanks go to our resourceful library staff and to everyone out there supporting our local library services.”

The Library Service advises it may take several days to process orders and reminds everyone of the many online services also available; from eBooks and eAudiobooks to magazines and newspapers and eLearning or language courses.
