Rediscover Cork County Interactive Tourism Map.

As the county begins to adjust to the new level 5 restrictions, Cork County Council is encouraging residents to discover the range of outdoor activities available to explore within a 5km radius of their homes via the Rediscover Cork County Interactive Tourism Map.

Launched in June as a response to COVID-19 under the Council’s Project ACT, the map has a wide range of detail on over 700 activities/attractions to engage in across the county.

A key feature of the map is the ‘Near Me’ tool, which enables the user to insert their location which then defaults to a radius of 5km. The map will then provide information on nearby attractions within that area and generate directions to an activity of choice, enabling the rediscovery of Cork County and its many hidden gems.

Chief Executive of Cork County Council, Tim Lucey says the map could be a valuable tool for everyone in Cork during the current Level 5 restrictions:

‘In the current situation whereby we are limited to only travel within 5km of our homes for exercise, this map can be of great benefit to everybody. While indoor attractions are closed at the moment, the map is very useful to discover a wide range of other activities, be it a walk, a cycle route, a beach, or an outdoor heritage site; there is something for everyone on this map and the beauty of it is you can set it to only show activities within 5 kilometres. The reality is we will be living under these restrictions for a full 6-week period and the discovery of a new place or activity can add a lot of value to a person’s day, particularly when we are all facing such challenges.’

Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr. Mary Linehan Foley describes how she found the map useful herself in discovering new things to do in her locality:

‘Using the map, I discovered a local walk in my area that I wasn’t previously aware of. I was able to generate directions to the trail and it also linked me to a website which had further detail on the route, its amenities and even its history. It is an incredible achievement of Cork County Council to have developed this interactive map and I would encourage all people in Cork to use it as part of their daily routine, in particular for the next 6 weeks and going forward.’

Rates Waiver Scheme 2020

COVID 19 - Waiver of Commercial Rates Scheme has been announced by Government.

The scheme provides for a 100% waiver of commercial rates for the 6-month period from 27th March 2020 to 27th September 2020. The scheme applies to all ratepayers except those in a small number of categories which are set out below. The waiver will be applied as a credit in lieu of rates for the 6-month period covered in 2020. These excluded categories are mainly utilities, banks, large supermarkets and corporates (as below). The full waiver applies to over 100,000 ratepayers nationwide.
Waiver will be automatically applied

An application to Cork County Council is not required. Cork County Council will automatically apply a 100% credit in lieu of commercial rates, for a six-month period, to classes and categories of occupied rateable property where the occupying business is not in an excluded category identified below. It is hoped to have this process completed by the end of August 2020.

In the event that you qualify for the waiver and have already paid your rates, once the waiver is applied it is likely that your rate account will have a credit balance. This credit can remain on the account or be refunded on application. If you wish seek a refund you should contact the Council’s Rates Collection Office by email at collection@corkcoco.ie or by phone at (021)4285252

to make arrangements.
What will happen after 27th September 2020?

The potential for the waiver to extend beyond the end of September will be kept under review by Government and any future extensions can be considered when there is greater certainty regarding the continuing impact of the pandemic on business and the reopening of society.
Excluded categories

In recognition that there is a small number of ratepayers for whom their business have not been affected by the pandemic, these rate payers will not be eligible for the automatic waiver. However, a fund is being provided for ratepayers in these categories who can demonstrate that the pandemic has had a significant negative impact on their business. These ratepayers should engage with Cork County Council in relation to their commercial rates.

This credit does not apply to the following Excluded Categories:
Public Service
Global Utility Networks on the Central Valuation List
Vacant Properties
Individual Office Premises with an annual rates bill of €100k or greater in 2020*
Individual Industrial Premises with an annual rates bill of €100k or greater in 2020*

*Individual premises refers to all property valued under a single property number.

Businesses in the excluded categories above may seek eligibility from Cork County Council if it can be shown that the business was severely impacted by the pandemic. The Council may request documentary evidence to support eligibility. In this circumstance, please apply to RatesWaiver@corkcoco.ie.

Multiple Sclerosis Ireland READaTHON

Multiple Sclerosis Ireland is pleased to announce that the MS READaTHON will take place this year, beginning on November 1st and lasting the full month. This year we have a brand new interactive website as the READaTHON will be going virtual for the first time in its 33 year history. The site is now live at www.msreadathon.ie Thousands of readers young and old will take part in raising awareness and vital funds to support the 9,000 people living with MS, the most common debilitating neurological condition affecting young adults in Ireland.

Locally the PRO of the Fermoy Branch which covers North & East Cork: Mary Sheahan - Lonergan has been involved with the MS Society for more years than she cares to admit & this year has been one of the most challenging to date for obvious reasons so she had decided to participate in the READaTHON to help raise much needed funds.

The MS Ireland community needs me, needs you, your business, your colleagues, and your family’s support this November to ensure those living with Multiple Sclerosis are not left behind.

You can find Mary’s fundraising page here: https://www.msreadathon.ie/fundraisers/marylonergan110404

Ava Battles, Chief Executive of MS Ireland said, “We are delighted that the MS READaTHON will go ahead again this year, its 33rd year. Young readers, parents, teachers and schools have continued to support the MS community, reading and raising funds to help people living with MS and their families. This is greatly appreciated and as each annual MS READaTHON comes around, we want to acknowledge their efforts and we look forward readers young and old rediscovering their love of reading. The MS READaTHON is our biggest fundraising campaign and we simply cannot keep our services running without it. This year, it takes on a whole new level of importance as we hope to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 and expected fundraising losses of over €1 million.

This year is different for everyone as we adjust to our ‘new normal’.  We’ve all had to adapt to our new reality and change how we live, socialise and work, however, out of adversity is born innovation. This year MS Ireland is embracing the challenges that face us by making the READaTHON a Virtual campaign where we will be launching a new interactive website that we hope will be a tremendous success”

The MS READaTHON

While the MS READaTHON is set to be different to previous years, the concept hasn’t changed. Students read whatever they like, as much as they can for 4 weeks from Nov 1st – 30th Nov. On our new website readers can earn virtual Reward Badges and Stars for the goals they achieve, they can build their avatars, share their campaign on social media and rate and review the books they read. Our new MS READaTHON website is designed to enrich a school’s reading culture without taking away from teachers precious time. We are delighted to launch our brand new, interactive website packed full of amazing features that we think students will love. For more see website

Now, more than ever the MS community need support and advice.  Funds raised by readers around the country directly support vital services, for example the MS Ireland Information Line, enabling one-to-one support for those newly diagnosed, physiotherapy and exercise classes to help people with MS remain independent, and respite care. Learn more at www.msreadathon.ie

COVID UNCERTAINTY

By bringing our READaTHON online we are addressing a number of issues:

-Less physical touch points. We spoke to teachers, we spoke to parents and one major concern was that they didn’t feel comfortable with how many physical pieces of sponsorship kit there has been traditionally. We’re doing away with sponsorship cards, all sponsorship is now online.

-Teacher’s time constraints. Now it’s simply a matter of registering the school and class on our new website, sending a link to the parents and that’s it! No collecting funds, no collating forms, no missing donations, no lodging funds.

-Environmental concerns. Traditionally the MS READaTHON has been quite paper heavy. To give you an idea, in 2019 we sent out 45,000 sponsorship packs. Bringing it all online completely does away with this.

About MS

Multiple Sclerosis - meaning ‘many scars’- the most common debilitating neurological condition affecting young adults in Ireland. It affects the motor, sensory and cognitive functioning of the body and is usually diagnosed between 20 and 40 years of age. The impact of MS on individuals, their families and the community can undermine the resilience that is needed for individuals to remain purposeful and in control of their lives. Three times more women than men are diagnosed with MS. There is no cause or cure. Among other services, MS Ireland uses the funds raised to provide vital services that reduce the impact of MS including physiotherapy, general support services, and newly diagnosed seminars.

About MS Ireland

MS Ireland is the national organisation providing information, vital services and support to the MS community. We provide a wide range of specialised services and resources on a national, regional and local level. Services include; Regional Community Worker programmes for one-to-one support; physiotherapy; symptom management courses; newly diagnosed sessions and the MS Information Line, one of the first services used in the time leading up to or following a diagnosis. We also provide the only national respite and therapy centre for people with MS in Ireland.

More than two-thirds of the 9,000 people living with MS in Ireland access these resources. All those affected by the condition rely on MS Ireland to advocate on their behalf on any issues which will impact their quality of life.

Members of the public with any queries relating to MS are invited to call the MS Information Line 1850 233 233. Open Monday- Friday 10am- 2pm. Calls are strictly confidential.

Public Health Information

 Dear Colleague,

We hope this message finds you well.

We are grateful for your continuing support in helping to share information about COVID-19. Below are a few communications updates for you.

Public Health Measures

Ireland is moving to Level 5 at midnight on Wednesday night (21st October). See the measures that will come into place here.

Disability Day Services during Level 5

In line with current NPHET advice in respect of Level 5, disability day services will continue to remain open and are deemed essential. You can find more information here.

New COVID-19 Campaign

Bubbles - a new social media creative and content-sharing campaign for young people went live today. The first phase of the campaign will see TV, social and digital formats. The idea of the Bubble is to create a visual reminder for the protection we share when we follow public health actions, and how easily it can be lost. The bubble idea makes the invisible, visible. Please find the Partner Pack attached.

Flu Vaccine for Children aged 2-12 years

This autumn, children aged 2-12 years are offered the flu vaccine free of charge. The vaccine is administered by the GP or pharmacist using a nasal spray.

Children carry the flu virus in their system longer than adults do and they can spread the flu easily to others. If enough children are vaccinated against flu, fewer children and adults will need to see their doctor or need treatment in hospital because of flu. This is very important for our health services especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We will send a children’s flu vaccine partner pack to you next week. In the meantime, you can find more information on the flu vaccine for children here and you can watch the new TV ad here.
