Each year in Ireland, more than 2,750 families are affected by the death of a child. .Anam Cara, set up in 2008, is an all-island organisation providing information and support to these bereaved parents and families. We are inclusive; supporting families where there has been a death of a child2 of any age and through all circumstances. Information resources and bereavement support are provided throughout Ireland and Northern Ireland.
Over the last ten years, Anam Cara has undertaken an immense amount of work with limited staff. We have welcomed 145,000 website visitors, produced videos viewed over 21,000 times and disseminated 18,450 information packs. In the last year, we have run 137 events for parents, including 12 support groups and four half-day support events. In this one year, 2,135 parents attended events where over 650 parents were attending services for the first time. The average cost of this support is 139 euros per parent.
Based on our annual survey carried out in May 2020, this report summarises the impact currently produced by our work and maps the survey's findings against our core values. This shows to the extent to which we are carrying out our work in the way in which we intend. This impact review shows very high satisfaction from people who use our services. 1 CSO Statistics RoI/NI for registered deaths between the age of 0-44 years 2 ‘Child of any age’ also includes adult children. 95% of people are satisfied or very satisfied with Anam Cara activities. 96% are satisfied or very satisfied with the Family Day and Remembrance Events. 95% are very satisfied or satisfied with Parent Evenings and Bereavement Information Events
Anam Cara's office will be open Monday to Friday throughout August from 9am to 5pm should you need any Anam Cara information packs posted to you. We will be available to talk to you or any bereaved parents over the phone should they need any information.
We hope the Anam Cara 'face to face' groups will return in September 2021. To date there is no directive from the HSE about how community groups can resume their meetings and what health and safety procedures need to be in place. So, until we get the confirmation that community groups can recommence we will continue to support bereaved parents through our online events and 1-2-1 support telephone calls.

Atlantia Clinical Trials highlights the difference between normal age-related forgetfulness and more serious memory problems and offers tips on natural methods to aid memory retention ~
If you are aged over 60 and a little forgetful on occasion, you might be looking for natural ways to boost your memory.
From July, a Cork-based research company Atlantia Clinical Trials will embark on an exciting new scientific study that will clinically assess the effectiveness of a daily turmeric supplement in boosting cognitive function in older people. They are seeking to recruit over 150 participants aged from 60 to 85 to be part of this 6-month study. Not only could you reap the health benefits, but suitable candidates will be paid €400 for their time.

The Atlantia Cognition Study will investigate the memory health benefits obtained from consuming the natural turmeric root, which is more commonly recognised as the vibrant yellow spice used in Indian cooking. Turmeric is rich in a compound called curcumin which is an antioxidant meaning that it can protect cells against damage caused by free radicals, and it is also well known for its anti-inflammatory properties which have been long used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. Recent studies have pinpointed benefits of the compound in improving memory so this claim is being further explored by Atlantia to determine validity and whether it can be brought to market as a natural supplement to offer a memory boosting benefit for age related memory depreciation.
If you are getting older and are worried about memory and mental agility, it’s useful to know what is normal and what is not. As with any changes as we age, the unknown can be daunting – after all our memories are linked to who we are as people, our identity, and our social interactions. You may find it takes longer than before to learn something new, you occasionally forget a word or a name, and now and then you might misplace an item like keys, wallet or phone and start to feel a little self-conscious about it and wonder if it a normal part of aging or the first sign of more serious memory problems.
Claire Tansey, Director of Operations at Atlantia Clinical Trials says “The most important difference to be aware of is that serious memory and cognitive problems inhibit the ability to clearly think and perform daily tasks and our usual roles in life – it then becomes a health concern that needs further evaluation by healthcare professionals. If you have any concerns about memory and cognition, then speak to your GP or other medical professional”.

If you are concerned about a suspected case of elder abuse please call the HSE helpline on 1850 24 1850 (Monday to Saturday – 8am to 8pm).Age Action’s Care and Repair does small DIY jobs, free of charge, for older people to help them maintain their homes and their independence. Operating in Cork, Dublin and Galway, Care and Repair does jobs that might be more difficult to complete as we get older people but not big enough to call in a tradesperson.
Age Action’s Care and Repair prioritises carrying out jobs in the homes of older people who are being discharged or have recently been discharged from hospital. If someone is coming out of hospital, no matter where they live, we would support them to make sure their house is safe. Care and Repair can remove trip hazards, install handrails, replace toilet seats or move a bed downstairs to make sure the home is ready for their return. For any job that is too big or specialised for our team we can provide details of local tradespeople.
If you require work done in your home to make it safer you can call us on the numbers listed here.
