Each year in Ireland, more than 2,750 families are affected by the death of a child. .Anam Cara, set up in 2008, is an all-island organisation providing information and support to these bereaved parents and families. We are inclusive; supporting families where there has been a death of a child2 of any age and through all circumstances. Information resources and bereavement support are provided throughout Ireland and Northern Ireland.
Over the last ten years, Anam Cara has undertaken an immense amount of work with limited staff. We have welcomed 145,000 website visitors, produced videos viewed over 21,000 times and disseminated 18,450 information packs. In the last year, we have run 137 events for parents, including 12 support groups and four half-day support events. In this one year, 2,135 parents attended events where over 650 parents were attending services for the first time. The average cost of this support is 139 euros per parent.
Based on our annual survey carried out in May 2020, this report summarises the impact currently produced by our work and maps the survey's findings against our core values. This shows to the extent to which we are carrying out our work in the way in which we intend. This impact review shows very high satisfaction from people who use our services. 1 CSO Statistics RoI/NI for registered deaths between the age of 0-44 years 2 ‘Child of any age’ also includes adult children. 95% of people are satisfied or very satisfied with Anam Cara activities. 96% are satisfied or very satisfied with the Family Day and Remembrance Events. 95% are very satisfied or satisfied with Parent Evenings and Bereavement Information Events
Anam Cara's office will be open Monday to Friday throughout August from 9am to 5pm should you need any Anam Cara information packs posted to you. We will be available to talk to you or any bereaved parents over the phone should they need any information.
We hope the Anam Cara 'face to face' groups will return in September 2021. To date there is no directive from the HSE about how community groups can resume their meetings and what health and safety procedures need to be in place. So, until we get the confirmation that community groups can recommence we will continue to support bereaved parents through our online events and 1-2-1 support telephone calls.
