Matrix by Przemyslaw Richter at LHQImage by Sean Daly, courtesy of the artist Przemyslaw Richter's solo exhibition Matrix will open at our LHQ Gallery this Thursday 6pm, all are welcome. The works explore the individual genetic patterns seen in human body parts with the support of biometric technology. Unlocking your phone with your thumbprint and face recognition is quickly becoming the norm. These biometrics – fingerprints, iris scans – are unique human physical identifiers. By focusing on close ups of irises, Przemyslaw Richter wants to bring attention to these microscopic patterns and remind us that everyone has individual biometrics. His works, through the media of video and animation, look at identity and compare the microscopic abstract designs in the human body. Richter is an MTU Crawford College of Art and Design graduate who was awarded Cork County Council’s Arts Office Bursary in 2022 which resulted in this exhibition titled “Matrix”. Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr. Frank O’Flynn says, We are delighted to support the work of emerging artists through our annual graduate bursary programme. Cork County Council appreciates the value of assisting newly graduated artists as they begin to build a career in the arts. Przemyslaw Richter’s degree show impressed us immeasurably, and we are excited to see where his career takes him next. His work is an important comment on the world we are living in now.
For this exhibition, Richter takes inspiration from Bruce Nauman's work Green Light Corridor, 1970, where he invites the audience to participate in the artwork allowing the audience to walk through a lit-up corridor. Richter’s series Identification takes over the gallery space, with projections on the two main walls. The placement of these projections forces the viewer to walk between them, interrupting the image and becoming part of the work. The interruption in the light, to Richter, is a scanning of the audience and replicates the scanning that is so commonplace in modern technology.
