A computer rendered image of the proposed multifunctional community hub in Ladysbridge.

Cork County Council has received almost €100,000 in funding to progress two Town Centre First Projects in Kinsale and Ladysbridge in County Cork. The projects are among 53 announced by the Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphries TD.

The funding will support pre-development works and support costs including detailed design, planning, procurement, professional fees, assessments and other development costs.

In Ladysbridge, it is planned to develop a multifunctional community hub for the people of the East Cork village and surrounding areas. The development will include a remote working hub with managed serviced offices and meeting rooms as well as a full-time childcare facility.

The Kinsale project centres around redeveloping Short Quay into a new town centre plaza, designing an area where the community and tourists can gather for events.

The Ladysbridge project has received the maximum €50,000 in funding which will be used to progress the development of detailed construction drawings and preparatory groundworks.

The Kinsale development has received €49,050 for a topographical survey of the area and a design to be carried out by a consulting engineer. An archaeologist will also be procured to feed into the design process and submission of planning permission.

Cork County Council Library and Arts Service Announce New Book Clubs for Nursing Homes and Older People

Cork County Council Library and Arts Service has launched a new initiative that will help to establish book clubs for older people in Nursing Homes and those attending Day Care Centres around Cork County.

Cork County Council Library and Arts Service has launched a new initiative that will help to establish book clubs for older people in Nursing Homes and those attending Day Care Centres around Cork County. The new free service was launched this week at Amberley Nursing Home and Cottages, one of the many centres that receive regular visits from the Council’s Mobile Library Service.

In recognition of different needs and preferences, multiple formats of books are available to choose from. These include audiobooks on CD, large print titles, quick reads (adult novellas, from popular authors with buff coloured paper for glare avoidance) and short story collections. It is also possible to download an e-book or e-audio book title through the “Borrowbox” app where font size can be customised to the readers preference.

Support will be available for activities personnel in Nursing Homes and Day Care Centres to help organise and set up the book club for their patrons. Books can be delivered by the Mobile Library, as part of its schedule or collected from the local library.

Tadhg Daly, CEO of Nursing Homes Ireland, expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, "We are delighted to partner with Cork County Library for the launch of this Book Club. With this initiative, we are bringing the local community closer to our nursing homes, ensuring that everyone has access to enriching experiences, regardless of age. Supporting this launch during NHI National Nursing Homes Week is especially meaningful, with over 250 nursing homes participating in the celebrations. It is a perfect opportunity to honour the vibrant lives of residents and the dedicated staff who care for them. We look forward to growing and strengthening this wonderful initiative for residents and encourage all local councils to consider similar partnerships, recognising the potential to strengthen community bonds. Nursing Home residents look forward to the regular mobile library visits and we look forward to seeing such initiatives rolled out across the country in the future."

Cork County Council’s Library and Arts Service currently provides books for 75 Book Clubs around the county with the majority meeting monthly in a local branch library. It also provides books for a number of private book clubs as well as 70 children’s book clubs.

For further details and information, including a list of available titles, contact bookclubs@corkcoco.ieor call 021 4546499.

The event, aptly named “Cork GAA Community Clean Up Day,” will see players, coaches, officials and supporters come together to clean up various locations across Cork City and County. With a goal of collecting and properly disposing of large volumes of waste, this initiative aims to foster a cleaner, healthier environment. It is supported as part of the Waste Enforcement Regional Lead Authorities (WERLAs) as part of their 2024 Anti-Dumping Initiative.

The date of the event is significant as it is the Saturday following World Clean Up day on Friday 20th September.

Event Details:

  • Date: 21 September
  • Time: 10 am to 2pm
  • Locations: throughout Cork city and county
  • Participants: Cork GAA, Cork Camogie and Cork LGFA members, supporters, and volunteers from the community together with support from Cork City Council and Cork County Councils

Key Highlights:

  • Environmental Impact: By removing litter from public spaces, the initiative will help protect local wildlife, improve public health, and enhance the natural beauty of our communities.
  • Community Engagement: The event encourages community participation, fostering a sense of unity and shared responsibility for the environment.
  • Youth Involvement: Young athletes and their families will play a significant role, teaching the next generation the importance of environmental responsibility and community service.

The organisation is sustained by its communities where the passion for our games is passed from one generation to the next, and we must ensure we pass on the planet in a stronger position to the next generation.

Cork GAA’s Chairperson, Pat Horgan expressed enthusiasm and strong support for the event: “We are incredibly proud of our members for organising this vital initiative. As sports people, we understand the importance of maintaining clean and safe spaces for both our training and our community. This event is a testament to our commitment to not only excel in sports but also to be responsible citizens.”

CORK COUNTY COUNCIL IS AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES EMPLOYER

217 New Homes Proposed for Cork Docklands

x

Cork City Council is proposing a partnership with JCD Group to deliver a substantial cost-rental apartment scheme on the former Carey's Tool Hire site on Albert Quay.

'The Railyard Apartments' will deliver 217 much-needed new homes at the heart of the city Docklands, consisting of a mix of studios, 1,2 and 3 bedroom units.

The scheme will consist of a landmark, slender 24 storey tower built to a high architectural standard on Albert Quay/Albert Street, which will step down to 12 storeys and then 9 storeys.

The design is similar to what was previously granted planning permission by An Bord Pleanála, with minor modifications to comply with updated fire safety and apartment standards. It is also proposed to omit the basement car park, given the site's good proximity to public transport. An area on the ground floor will be dedicated to exclusive use by both the local community and the arts.

The proposed mixed tenure cost-rental and social housing development, to include rightsizing homes for older persons, is progressing through the Part 8 Planning process which includes public consultation and will be put forward for the approval of the elected members of Cork City Council later in the Autumn.

JCD Group will also carry out the already permitted renovation and upgrade works to the listed buildings located to the rear of the site, to be completed in parallel with the proposed apartments. This will consist of a new bar/restaurant in the former terminus building, a new publicly accessible plaza and the refurbishment of the former Carey House building.

The Railyard Apartments development is a collaboration between Cork City Council and JCD Group and arises from Cork City Council’s Competitive Dialogue procurement process which seeks to deliver innovative solutions to social and affordable housing delivery in the city. Cork City Council proposes to partner with an approved housing body for the ultimate delivery of this mixed tenure scheme.

If planning is granted on the development, construction is expected to start in Q1 2025.
