NORTH CORK DEMENTIA ALLIANCE DATES

 

Newmarket Dementia Café

We are really looking forward to meeting again on Thursday 5th September 2024 in the Culturlann, Newmarket, 11am-1pm. Due to the popularity of this talk in Fermoy, we have arranged for Eugene Mathews of WHO Healthcare to speak to us about ‘Vision and Dementia’.

His talk will focus on research that was carried out in the Waterford Institute of Technology by Prof Riona Mulcahy and Prof John Nolan. This research focuses on Age-related Macular Degeneration and Alzheimer’s disease.

All are welcome.

 

September Social Club save the date

This will take place on Monday 16th September at 11am. We are hoping to visit Annes Grove Gardens in Castletownroche but this is to be confirmed.

 

Dementia Information Evening

 

We are delighted to be working with the HSE Cork North Community Work Department to host an information evening on Wed 25th September 2024 in the Charleville Park Hotel, 6.30-9pm.

Speakers include

·       Dr Emma Jennings, Consultant Geriatrician in Mallow General Hospital

·       Charlie Drake will be speaking about having a diagnosis of dementia

·       Ann Cunningham will be speaking about caring for her husband

·       Kevin Quaid, Chair of the European Dementia Working Group will be speaking about Dementia Inclusive Communities

·       Amy Murphy and I will be speaking about local services

·       There will also be a range of information stands

Family Information Sessions

The next six week block of information sessions for relatives of people with dementia will start on Thursday 3rd October, 7-9.15pm and will run for six consecutive Thursday evenings until Thursday 7th November.

It will be held in Mallow Primary Healthcare Centre with different topics covered each evening.

A range of topics will be covered including:
• An overview of dementia
• Changing relationships
• Communication
• Understanding behaviour
• Engaging in activities
• Safety at home
• Looking after yourselves
• Accessing information and support
• Personal care
• Nutrition and eating well

There will also be opportunities to share experiences with others in similar situations

Other events that may be of interest

Bantry Memory Café takes place on Wed 4th Sept from 11am to 1pm in the Maritime Hotel, Bantry. Join them for a morning of song with ‘Singing for the Brain’ musical facilitator Liz Clark. 

The ‘Singing for the Brain’ programme recognizes the therapeutic effects of music on the brain and body and utilizes singing to stimulate memory and promote health and wellbeing.
