Additional Information: Blarney & District Historical Society presents an illustrated lecture titled :The Siege of Cork 1690’ Guest Speaker: Mr. John Mulcahy  of Blarney and District Historical Society. After the Battle of the Boyne, William of Orange dispatched a force under John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough (then 1st Earl) who reached Cork by sea on 21 September 1690. His English forces were 5,000 strong and he also had at his disposal a fleet which blockaded the port of Cork. His forces took the forts which commanded the hills around Cork and commenced a bombardment of the city to begin a siege which lasted less than a week. When a breach was opened in the city walls, the town’s garrison opened surrender negotiations but Marlborough refused the request. A few days later, the Williamites mounted an assault of the breach. This time the garrison surrendered and became prisoners. Marlborough accepted the surrender but his troops sacked and looted the city, did a great deal of damage and abused the Catholic inhabitants. Many civilians were killed before order was restored. John Mulcahy brings to life the high and low points of this famous siege which eventually led to the ‘Flight of the Wild Geese’, a massive emigration of soldiers and their generals to various continental armies in 1691. CORK COUNTY COUNCIL INVITES PARTICIPATION FROM LOCAL GROUPS, ORGANISATIONS AND INDIVIDUALS TO BE PART OF THE COUNTY CORK CULTURE AND CREATIVITY STRATEGY 2018-2022

045

In keeping with the overarching aims of Creative Ireland, a 5-year Culture and Creativity Strategy is being undertaken for County Cork, 2018 - 2022. ‘Creative Ireland is the Government’s Legacy Programme for Ireland 2016, which places creativity at the centre of public policy.  It is a high-level, high-ambition, all-of-government initiative to mainstream creativity in the life of the nation so that individually and collectively, in our personal lives and in our institutions, we can realise our full creative potential. Underpinning this creative potential is an understanding of the importance of the Arts, Heritage, our Libraries, our Irish Language, our Music and Traditions, our Commemorations and our Cultural Tourism and how these can collectively promote and encourage creativity in all its forms.

The Creative Ireland Programme is an ambitious one and is based on the principles of collaboration and communication, community empowerment and internationalisation. It has five key strands; Enabling the Creative Potential of Every Child; Enabling Creativity in Every Community; Investing in our Creative and Cultural Infrastructure; Ireland as a Centre of Excellence in Media Production and Unifying our Global Reputation. It is Strand 2, Creativity in Every Community, that each Local Authority across the country seeks to embrace most strongly and here in County Cork, with such a strong community sector with an unrivalled track record, the 5-year plan is one to openly embrace.

Whether you are an artist or maker, a member of your local library, a local arts groups, a local historical society, a drama club, or community group in its widest sense, or even if this is something that is purely a personal interest, this is an opportunity to share ideas, pool resources and be part of the creation of a unique and distinctive Cultural and Creativity Strategy for County Cork, as part of the Nationally aligned and fully supported Creative Ireland Programme.

With this in mind, Cork County Council will host a series of open meetings and discussions for anyone interested in participating in the development and delivery of County Cork’s 5-year Cultural and Creativity Strategy. At these meetings the Strategy will be discussed but members of Cork County Council’s Culture Team will also be on hand to offer advice and information on a range of different queries relating to Culture and Creativity locally. Your attendance at any of the following venues would be appreciated:

Cork County Council, in addition to organising this series of open meetings, is also seeking written submissions from interested parties with suitable ideas, proposals, comments and overall suggestions for the County Cork Cultural and Creativity Strategy, 2018-2022. This is a great opportunity for the people of Cork to shape the Cultural Development of the County and all comments are most welcome. Closing date for receipt of said submissions is Friday 17th November 2017, to be sent to creativeireland@corkcoco.ie.

As part of the roll out of Creative Ireland in Cork County, 2017, a Culture and Creativity Action Plan was undertaken for the year, which is available to view on www.corkcoco.ie/arts-heritage-creative-ireland (or by clicking here). This plan, having benefited from dozens of public submissions, provides background information on Creative Ireland in County Cork and should be used as a practical working document to stimulate ideas for the 5-year Strategy going into the future.

Creative Ireland is an insightful legacy project that sets out to harness the country's culture, arts and heritage over the next five years with the purpose of ensuring ‘that Ireland offers a meaningful, value driven quality of life’. It is hoped that the County of Cork will do itself proud in each and every respect.

Cork County Council’s Creative Ireland Team (Culture Team), with the support of Mary Ryan, Director of Service, and the East Cork Municipal District, is organising Cork County’s inaugural Creative Ireland Conference. The two day conference will feature a range of great speakers and will take place in the Town Hall, Youghal, Co. Cork on Thursday and Friday, 16th and 17th November, 2017. Free Service to Dispose of Unused Medicines Properly (DUMP)

A free service to dispose of unused or out of date medicines will be available to the general public in Cork and Kerry from Monday 9th October to Saturday, 18th November 2017.
The ‘Dispose of Unused Medicines Properly’ (DUMP) campaign has been organised by Cork Kerry Community Healthcare with the community pharmacists in Cork and Kerry and is supported by Cork City Council, Cork County Council, Kerry County Council, and the Southern Regional Waste Management Office.
Almost all pharmacies in Cork and Kerry are participating in the campaign and are actively encouraging people to return unwanted or out of date medicines to them so that it can be disposed of safely and properly.

Medicines can accumulate in the home for a variety of reasons e.g. unfinished courses of antibiotics or a condition/illness that is no longer a problem and subsequently the remainder of the medication is not used. Also, older people or someone with an ongoing illness can often have large amounts of medicine at home. Whatever the reason, the HSE and pharmacists would urge householders to take this opportunity to dispose of these unwanted medicines (prescription or over the counter) safely.

Louise Creed, HSE Pharmacist explains why people should take this opportunity to safely dispose of unwanted medicines and said:
“We would strongly urge people to take this opportunity to get rid of out of date or unused medicines. Medication can pose a real hazard in the home, particularly to children or other vulnerable people. Clearing out your medicine cabinet is something that should be done on a regular basis. Check all the dates and remove anything that is out of date or no longer required. As well as the hazards posed by overdose, accidental poisoning and damage to the environment, medicines can change when out of date and may end up being harmful.”

THE INAUGURAL CREATIVE IRELAND COUNTY CORK CONFERENCE 2017:

THE CULTURE OF CREATIVITY

Taking Place in the Town Hall, Youghal on Thursday and Friday, 16th and 17th November 2017

DSC01422

The County of Cork is home to a wealth of culture and heritage and a most impressive means of expressing this through a number of creative cultural outputs, ranging from Film, Music and Theatre to Literary and Visual outputs. The Creative Ireland Programme seeks to put culture at the heart of everything we do, and provides the County of Cork a great opportunity to enhance and further promote and encourage the cultural undertakings of the County.

In recognition of such vast culture, as well as the numerous community groups engaging with the Creative Ireland Programme and culture as a whole in the County of Cork, a Conference has been organised by Cork County Council, which examines the essential connection between heritage and art, culture and creativity; by indeed looking at the Culture of Creativity.

Over two days, November 16th and 17th 2017, and located in the historic coastal town of Youghal, the Conference will feature over a dozen top speakers in the realm of culture and creativity. Thursday 16th, commencing at lunch time (13:30), will see talks by Dr. Matt Crannitch; Paul O’Reilly and Ian Wilson with regard to our musical creativity and Eoin Nash, John McHarg, Billy O’Callaghan and Kevin O’Shannahan will deliver presentations on the importance of inclusivity in cultural undertakings. Cork County Council’s Culture Team (with representation across the Arts, Library, Heritage, Tourism and Irish sections of the Council) will also shed light on the cultural activities of Cork County Council and the various supports and initiatives currently in place. The evening, commencing at 19:00, will then see a wonderful conference performance which will include the Youghal Comhaltas Group (CCE Craobh Eochaille); Ian Wilson with Saxophonist Cathal Roche and a performance by Peadar Ó Riada. The following day will see a wonderful morning of talks on Film, Theatre and the Visual Arts and will feature Rossa Mullin, Oonagh Kearney, Mary McGrath, Con Downing, Katie Holly, Geoff Gould, Dr. Eimear O’Connor, Mirandi Driscoll and Ann Davoren. Aileen Murray of Youghal’s Socio-Economic Group will also speak about the historic town of Youghal from a cultural perspective and Tom O’Neill will speak about the cultural importance of Spike Island. The afternoon will then see the engagement of conference participants in a discussion and workshop with Cork County Council’s Arts Strategic Policy Group and Culture Team to assist in the formulation of Cork County’s very first Culture and Creativity Strategy (2018 – 2022).
