Clean Coasts’ 11th annual Love your Coast photography competition is now open for entries, capture the uniqueness of our coastal communities, environments or waterways and enter your best shots by 9am, 17th August 2020.

With some of the most spectacular coastlines in the world, make sure you bring your camera as you explore the Irish coast this summer and capture its beauty. There is a prize fund of €5,000, up for grabs across five categories, Coastal Heritage, Coastal Landscape, People & the Coast, Wildlife & the Coast and Underwater. Every year this competition draws a large amount of interest from Ireland’s amateur photographers, coastal enthusiasts and the conservation minded. There is a diverse range of categories ensuring there is something for everyone.    

The Love Your Coast competition aims to celebrate Ireland’s diverse waters by capturing its stunning coastline, beautiful beaches, epic cliff faces and raging rivers.  

Working with communities on the ground, Clean Coasts’ mission is to help foster pride in our coastline, supporting Clean Coasts communities, groups and volunteers to tackle issues affecting their local area. This competition provides an opportunity to view the coast and our waterways that Clean Coasts programme works to protect from a completely different perspective and see the beauty captured therein.

Age Action - Getting started Kit

Age Actions’ Getting Started KIT supports older people to keep in touch with their loved ones during the Covid-19 pandemic. We all are feeling the effects of social distancing, and older people are particularly impacted being asked to cocoon at home. Now it is more important than ever to keep in touch with family and friends so Age Action drew on our Getting Started programme which offered face to face digital skills classes, to create easy How To Guides.

The Getting Started KIT is made up of seven How To guides that will support older people to learn, use, and be confident using smartphones and applications.

 The Age Action Getting Started KIT materials are available to download below or people can call 01 8730372 leave their name and address and Age Action will post the How to Guides within 10 days.

Zoom is a programme that you can download to your smartphone or laptop to enable you to make free video calls with a group of family or friends for up to 40 minutes.

SVP Ireland is part of the international Society which is represented in over 140 countries. Our goal is to fight poverty in all its forms through the practical assistance to people in need.

Over 230 Vincent’s  charity shops are a very important aspect of the service SVP provides. Not only do they provide people with new and lightly worn items at affordable prices, they also provide an income source for the Society, which is recycled directly back into the community.

The charity shops are managed by a small number of professionals, assisted by a large number of volunteers and by community employment trainees. The profits generated from the charity shops, some of which also supply furniture, are recycled into local Conferences around Ireland to support those in need. New Guidelines on Visiting in Nursing homes

Nursing homes and other residential care settings no longer have to

restrict the number of nominated visitors for residents. New guidelines

from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) apply to acute

mental health facilities and community housing units for people with

disabilities as well as nursing homes. Visits may be limited to an hour

with some flexibility on compassionate grounds. The guidelines allow

for visits, even during an outbreak if the situation permits, although an

ongoing outbreak may result in a temporary suspension of visits. The

limit on the number of people nominated as visitors for residents has

been removed. The recommended number of visitors at any one time

is two, but there can be some flexibility around this number. Visits by

children can now be facilitated as long as they have appropriate

supervision. We are welcomes this news which is bound to

impact positively on the emotional wellbeing of many older people.

The Equality Fund 2020-2023 has been launched to support organisation and groups that empower marginalised communities and tackle systemic inequality. It will focus on three strands: 

1. Empowering Women 

2. Strengthening Communities 

3. Building equality Together.

Lissarda Ambush 100 Years On

Lissarda Ambush 100 years on: On 22^nd August 1920 a group of Irish volunteers under the command of Patrick O’Leary attacked an RIC patrol just outside Lissarda Village in Mid Cork. The only fatality in the ambush was Michael Galvin, Quarter Master with the Irish Volunteers. Michael was a local man, married with two young children, and his memory is honoured with a monument on the Cork side of Lissarda village. The special 100^th anniversary of the ambush  is being commemorated this August by Kilmurry Historical & Archaeological Association with the launch of both an exhibition in Independence Museum Kilmurry and a book about the ambush by local historian Mary O’Mahony. The exhibition will educate the audience about those involved in the ambush as well as local events at the time and will be open to the public from 2pm Sunday August 23^rd 2020 at Independence Museum Kilmurry . The book ‘Lissarda Ambush’ gives an in-depth account of the ambush and those who participated on both sides. It will be available for sale from that weekend also. The exhibition will be on display from launch date throughout September. Museum opening times are Thurs to Sun 2-5pm but can be visited at other times by prior request. Community Information Meeting in relation to the Adrigole River.

The Local Authority Waters Programme is hosting an online Community Information Meeting on Wednesday the 19th August, 7.30pm via Zoom in relation to the Adrigole River. The Adrigole Catchment in West Cork is one of 190 areas prioritised for focused water quality action by the Local Authority Waters programme.  We will be visiting the catchment later this summer and will be working with the public, state agency partners and the agricultural, forestry and marine sectors to address water quality issues. Usually we hold face-to-face meetings with the local community to talk about water quality in their catchment and explain our work however to comply with Covid-19 restrictions, this Adrigole Community Information Meeting will need to be held via Zoom.
