Passage West & Carrigtwohill Community Led Consultation

SECAD Partnership is currently undertaking a process of community led consultation in Carrigtwohill and Passage West to develop a Town and Village Renewal Plan with Cork County Council.

Through an online (or printed) survey, we hope to capture the views of as many individuals in the Carrigtwohill and Passage West areas to ensure that it represents the views of all in the area.

To this end, I would ask you to please
  • complete the survey (along with committee members) for your community group
  • complete the survey in your capacity as a resident of the area, is as a private individual or reflecting the views of your household
  • forward the link below to other community groups and to those you know personally who may be interested in completing the survey on their own behalf within the Carrigtwohill and Passage West areas.
We aim to get as many surveys as possible completed by next Wednesday 1st November.

To access the survey, just click on the link below – it will take no longer than 10 minutes to complete and your opinion is greatly valued.

For those who may not wish to complete the survey electronically, I attach a pdf of the survey which can be printed and completed and returned to SECAD at the address below.

This information can also be accessed through the SECAD website (www.secad.ie) and SECAD facebook pagehttps://www.facebook.com/secadcork .  We would be very grateful if you could share this link on your social media.

Please feel free to contact me on 021 4613432 if you have any queries.

Kind regards

Event:
Wartime American Sailors and Submarines off Co. Cork 100 Years Ago
Location: The Parish Centre, Clonakilty, Co. Cork

In 1917, unrestricted submarine warfare by German U-boats brought the United States into WWI and created a crisis in Britain.  To defeat the submarine menace, an American naval fleet with 10,000 sailors was dispatched off the coast of County Cork. The illustrated lecture will explain the circumstances of this extraordinary event, and how Cork residents dealt with their unexpected American guests. Dr. John Borgonovo has published a number of books in recent years, including: "Spies, Informers, and the 'Anti-Sinn Féin' Society: The Intelligence War in Cork City, 1920-1921"; "The Dynamics of War and Revolution: Cork City, 1916-1918"; "Exercising a close vigilance over their daughters: Cork women, American sailors, and Catholic vigilantes, 1917-18" and "Something in the Nature of a Massacre: The Bandon Valley Killings Revisited" (with Andy Bielenberg). His latest publication (with co-authors John Crowley, Donal Ó Drisceoil and Mike Murphy), is the highly-acclaimed and magnificient "Atlas of the Irish Revolution". In July of this year, Dr. Borgonovo organised a very successful conference on "Winning the Western Approaches - Unrestricted Submarine Warfare and the US Navy in Ireland 1917-1918". Attendees at next Thursday's Dúchas Clonakilty Heritage are in for a treat with a talk by such an eminent speaker and are advised to arrive well before the 8.30pm starting time as seating is limited. I hope you are keeping well.
Last night was a great evening with regard to the Muintir na Tíre Pride in Our Community Awards and down the road in Dripsey the evening also saw the launch of the Inniscarra Historical Journal ‘Changing Times’.
There is plenty happening around the County over the next week or two (including this Bank Holiday Weekend) and this email is also a reminder regarding the upcoming Creative Ireland Workshops taking place throughout the County of Cork, the first of which takes place this evening in Mallow Library at 18:30 – all welcome. This evening will also see the launch of a wonderful exhibition of Cork Photos in the County Hall with thanks to the Cork Foundation and wonderful historical talks both in Bantry and in Clonakilty.

You may be aware of bereaved families in your community, who you could pass this information on to. We would really appreciate any help you can give us in promoting this event in your community.

Please note that the meeting is open to bereaved parents only.

Anam Cara, an organisation that supports bereaved parents, will hold its next monthly Parent Evening on Wednesday 1st of November from 19:30 to 21:00 in the Clayton Hotel, Silver Springs, Tivoli, Cork. Anam Cara offers a safe and comfortable setting where you can ‘drop the mask’ and be yourself among people who understand. This event is open to all bereaved parents regardless of the age your child died, the circumstances of their death, or whether the death was recent or not.

“The solidarity experienced by being among people who are bound together by a common feeling of appalling loss is a great help. None of us wanted to be in this group nor would wish it on others but the feeling of understanding - which doesn't need to be verbally expressed - is a support. We all understand.”

For more information see anamcara.ie or ring their Information Line on 085 2888 888.

Take Care

Make your voice heard – Charities Regulator hosts Cork meeting to capture public opinion on governance of charities

The Charities Regulator will host a public meeting in Cork next week to capture the opinion of the general public and people with an interest in Irish charities on how charities should be governed.

“The Charities Regulator is seeking the opinion of charities trustees, their staff, volunteers, service users, donors and funders, for their input on an important piece of work currently being undertaken,” Charities Regulator Chief Executive John Farrelly said.

The Cork meeting (at the Ambassador Hotel, 7pm, Wednesday, 1 November) is the first in a series of regional meetings being organised as part of a national consultation process.

The Regulator has established a panel to make proposals for the governance of charities and to support trustees in their duties. These standards will deliver improved outcomes for our society through better focused charities where volunteers, staff, service recipients and all other stakeholders will have a common point of reference for governance standards.

As part of this process, the panel is seeking to consult the public and other stakeholders on issues such as governance responsibility, monitoring, governance code and guidelines.  A series of public meetings and an online survey are being organised to give people the opportunity to make their views known.

Among the questions raised will be: Is there a need for a governance code specific to all registered Irish charities operating in the State?; Should these governance standards apply differently for small, medium and large charities?; Should there be reasonable checks on a person’s suitability to be a charity trustee?; Should there be a maximum term allowable for charity trustees?

“The opinion of the Cork public on these key issues is important and I would urge everyone who has an interest in charities, and the valuable work that they do, to take this opportunity to share their views with us,” Mr Farrelly said.

The following are the details of the public meetings:
Cork – Wednesday, 1 November, The Ambassador Hotel, Military Hill, St Lukes, Cork, 7-9pm. To register to attend click https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/charities-regulator-governance-meeting-cork-city-tickets-39079600136?ref=estw

Galway – Monday, 6 November, The Connacht Hotel, Old Dublin Road, Galway, 7-9pm.

Dublin – Tuesday, 21 November, O’Callaghan Alexander Hotel, 41-47 Fenian Street, Dublin 2, 7-9pm.

Each of the meetings will consist of a short presentation by the Charities Regulator’s Chief Executive John Farrelly followed by consultation with audience members.  The meetings will commence at 7pm.

The online questionnaire will be hosted on the Charities Regulator’s website from 1 November to 6 December.

In addition, if members of the public wish to make a written submission they can email it togovernancepanel@charitiesregulator.ie or post it to: Consultative Panel on Governance of Charitable Organisations, 3 Georges Dock, IFSC, Dublin 1.

For more information: email press@charitiesregulator.ie or contact Eamon Timmins, Head of Communications and Stakeholder Engagement, at 01-6331517 or 087-7520978.
