HERITAGE WEEK 2015 update from Conor Nelligan

Hi All,
Over 160 events have been organised throughout the County in close to 60 locations and it is hoped that as many people as possible partake in the week’s events. The Heritage Unit of Cork County Council will also be busy getting out and about and will hope to attend a number of events as well. 

County Heritage Week Event leaflets are available in all libraries and a number of tourist offices, council offices and a range of other places, be sure to pick up a copy.

Launch of Bandon Town Heritage Map
Location: 
Bandon Heritage Centre, Bandon, Co. Cork
Details:   
County Archaeologist Mary Sleeman together with Divisional Services (West) have embarked on preparing a number of heritage maps for many of the historic towns within County Cork's Western Divisional Area. Come along on the night to hear more about the project and indeed the launch of the Bandon Town Heritage Map.

The Medieval Heritage of Midleton

‘Flax from Ancient Times – and ‘Churchtown’s Historic Link to Flax’  
Location: 
Booney House, Churchtown, Co. Cork
Details:   
As a contribution to National Heritage Week, Churchtown Historical & Heritage Society is staging a Flax-themed Programme at the Booney House on Sunday August 30th. Denis Hickey will give talks on ‘Flax from Ancient Times – and ‘Churchtown’s Historic Link to Flax’ while Noel Linehan will present specimens of the plant, and will speak on the cultivation and milling process. The growing of flax as part of the new Greening Environmental Programme and its importance as a wild bird cover, will be the theme of a talk by Yvonne Coleman, a Glas planner in Agri-Envoirnonmental Science. Yvonne is representing Teagasc at the event. The Programme, which begins at 3.00pm will additionally feature music both instrumental and vocal. Refreshments will be provided. The Cobh Animation Ladies will also be busy during Heritage Week. Here are some of the details and emailccullinane2011@gmail.com for more information:

Weds. 26th to Fri. 28th Cobh Animation Team each day will present a Living History at the Titanic Experience Centre in Cobh town for the many guests from the visiting liners to the town.

Sun. 30th Cobh Animation Team will be animating the town for the visit of today's liner and will participate in the  official Wave Off from the quayside.

*REMINDER* - CELEBRATING CORK PAST EXHIBITION 2015 – DETAILS AND REGISTRATION

The 7th Annual Family Heritage Festival "Celebrating Cork Past Exhibition" will take place in the City Hall on Friday 02nd October from 10:00 to 18:30. This is a most wonderful day for all heritage societies, old and new, to highlight their work and meet like minded people on the day. The Exhibition will be officially Launched by the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr, Chris O' Leary and County Mayor, Cllr. John Paul O' Shea in the Millennium Hall at 12noon and the exhibition itself is strongly supported by Cork City Council, Cork County Council and the Cork Lions Club." The goal of Celebrating Cork Past Exhibition is to encourage parishes in Cork City and County to establish their own historical society to promote our unique heritage both local, national and internationally".
