Ballinora and District Community Association Win Pride of County Cork Award 2019

Ballinora and District Community Association
Winners of  Pride of County Cork Award
Left To Right:  Seamus Forde Muintir na Tire, Pat Desmond,  Ballinora and District Community Association Deputy County Mayor Michael Looney, Pat Tuile and Tom Kelly Ballinora and District Community Association Sean Holland and Sean Murphy Muintir na Tire
Representatives from over sixty groups from every corner of the county attended the Muintir na Tire Pride in our Community Awards in Oriel House Ballincollig.
The judging teams from Muintir and Cork County Council were very impressed this year with the high standard of the projects that were involved and found it very difficult to choose an overall winner but in the end Ballinora and District Community Association won the Pride of County Cork Award. Their project was a mural outlining the history of Ballinora, and complimented the many great projects around the Ballinora parish.

Deputy Mayor of County Cork Cllr Michael Looney praised Pride of County Cork Winner, Ballinora and District Community Association, all the winners of the other categories and all those who entered the competition this year.  He said that it was great to see the effort being put in by community groups in developing projects that highlight the wonderful county we live in. He thanked Muintir na Tire for organising the competition and said ‘this great competition rightly recognises and rewards community groups who develop and maintaining  locally-based Amenity/ Projects which are of long-term benefit to the local community’.

Mr Sean Holland Chairman of the organising committee pointed out that the competition also seeks to make local people conscious of their local environment and promotes litter free communities. He said the competition is open to all voluntary groups in County Cork. Sean added that the organisers had simplified the competition after consulting with local groups. He urged any group that were planning a project or were maintaining an existing project to consider entering the competition next year.

Sean Murphy President of Cork County Federation Muintir ná Tíre said these projects highlight the important link between our surroundings and our quality of life. Our heritage and pride in our community makes us want to do as much as we can to improve our locality. It is no co-incidence he said that people travel the length and breadth of the county, visiting beauty spots – beautiful scenery that lifts their spirits and hearts. The impact of the amenity projects developed is enormous he added.
He said community projects like those developed by the Ballinora and District Community Association make towns and villages much better places to live.
He thanked Deputy Mayor Looney and Cork County Council for providing support for all of the groups in bringing this principle home.  He said these projects also brighten up communities and enhance the natural beauty of the surroundings in which we live as well as attracting tourists.

Free Local CPR training in your community

13 people die from a cardiac arrest every day in Ireland and over 70% of these will happen in the home. Therefore, the chances are that if you ever need to perform CPR it will be on someone you know and care about, so the Irish Heart Foundation want to ensure that if you ever encounter this scenario you will be prepared by knowing how to perform CPR.

CPR is a simple skill and by attending this one-hour course your level of confidence and ability to perform CPR will greatly improve. Irish Heart Foundation have designed an easy course which one of their experienced facilitators can come and deliver to your club/group/community.

The course concentrates on recognising cardiac arrest, making the emergency call, listening to the call taker and knowing your Eircode. Candidates then get to practice compression-only CPR on a manikin. Awareness of how to use an AED, how to help someone who is choking, how to perform CPR on a child, recognising stroke and the difference between a cardiac arrest and a heart attack are also covered – all in only one hour and for FREE.

Please note that those who attend the training must be over 18 years.

If you have a suitable venue and at least 90 people that would be interested in attending the training, we ask that you become a CPR Champion in your club/group/community.

We need you and your friends to recruit as many people as possible so that Irish Heart Foundation can train them in this life saving skill of CPR.

When providing the courses, the aim is to conduct 3 one-hour training sessions with 30 attendees in each. These will be conducted in one day, in one location which will train at least 90 individuals in your community - all FREE of charge.

Irish Heart Foundation can discuss the timing of the courses with you, but can deliver them either during the day, an evening or at the weekend.

The instructor will bring manikins for participants to practice on along with their own laptop and projector to deliver a course. In terms of the room needed for the training they would require:
A screen to project the course on to, or a blank wall which can be comfortably viewed by all participants. The instructor will project the course video onto this.
The flooring needs to be suitable to kneel on for short periods of time.
35 chairs are required for participants to sit on, these should be set out in a semi-circle, facing the screen/wall so everyone can view the video.
There should be enough space for 10 people to practice on the manikins on the floor at the front of the room.

Helping People in West Cork impacted by Sexual Violence

West Cork Women Against Violence Project (WCWAVP) has partnered with Tusla, Kerry Rape Crisis Centre and Sexual Violence Centre Cork to survey Service Providers in the Statutory, Community and Voluntary sectors across West Cork, as well as community groups and clubs.  They want to hear from Services or Groups who are being contacted by or are supporting in any way children, teens or adults in West Cork who may have experienced sexual abuse or sexual violence of any kind.

You are asked you to take about 15 minutes to document your vital work or volunteering that includes supporting children, teens or adults in West Cork who may have experienced any kind of sexual abuse or sexual violence.

No matter how seldom you encounter calls for help regarding this issue, please use this survey to talk about your experience in West Cork.  The more of you who respond, the more successful the survey will be in highlighting this issue in a rural region, the work and volunteering that is being done already, and the challenges and gaps to address.

Your participation will provide evidence from community-level in West Cork and help to give those who are impacted by sexual violence in this rural region a voice in any new service that may develop in the future.
Please start the survey by clicking here.  This weblink takes you to the external website of SurveyMonkey.  Only Dr. Caroline Crowley, the researcher, can access the information that you share.
If you have any questions as you work through this survey, you can contact Caroline directly at  crowleyresearch@gmail.com or (087) 610 1510 and she will be happy to help you.
