Anticipation grows in North Cork as Community Groups and Tidy Towns Groups await Pride in our Community Awards

There is a great pride and sense of anticipation in North Cork as Community Groups and Tidy Towns Groups look forward to the Pride in our Community Awards on Wednesday October 27th. During the summer, despite restrictions, volunteers have been busy working on their projects and ensuring their towns and villages looked great. The Pride in Our Community awards are organised by Cork County Muintir na Tire in Conjunction with Cork County Council Environment Directorate.

See below some of the projects.

Knocknagree Fairfield Tidy Towns Committee's project for 2021 is  Painting, a wild life meadow in the centre of the village, Installed electricity for outdoor music, bingo, mass and coffee morning as fundraiser. Picnic tables in the centre of village to attract tourists and meeting area during covid.

Kanturk Tidy Towns Project at  Kanturk Town Park is Phase 2 of this project. In 2019 the  townspeople got together to give a facelift to the park, which had gone into a state of neglect, the project included a new playground in the Town Park

Fermoy Tidy Town's project  is Barry's Boreen which was , back in the fifties, a boreen from the Duntaheen road to the farms at the foot of Corrin hill. The elderly residents wanted something to remind them of the past and the  project  marks the boreen and shows people what it looked like, back in the day in a wildflower surrounding.

Mitchelstown Allotments Project was set up 7 years ago by Mitchelstown Community Council. They now have 30 plots all taken & growing produce. They have also built a polytunnel this year. They have people from all ages & nationalities growing all types of crops. Plots are let to local groups, like the local mental health group, the special friends group & the local primary girls school.
