Older adults ‘Keep Well, Keep Movin’ Community Health Festival a huge

success!

A free community health festival to help older adults connect with support and

wellbeing services took place in Midleton, Co.Cork on March 8th, from 10am-

3pm. HSE Cork North Community Work Department, Cork Kerry Community

Health Care organised the Keep Well, Keep Movin & Older Adults Community

Health Festival which saw in excess of 200 older adults in attendance.

Keep Well, Keep Movin & aims to connect older adults with a wide range of

community, voluntary and primary care services which promote enhanced

physical, social, cognitive, mental health and wellbeing. The health festival

involved guest speakers who spoke about Fair Deal, Singing for the Brain and

Falls and Frailty. The afternoon consisted of taster sessions in Retirement and

Mental Health, Activator Poles (to aid walking and balance), Mindfulness and

Cardiac First Response. A wide range of community and primary health

services were also present and open to the public to browse and speak to

professionals which they would otherwise not have had the opportunity to do

so.

Eileen O Leary, HSE General Manager Non-Residential Services Older Persons,

says: " The Keep Well, Keep Movin Community Health Festival was a great way

for older adults to learn about the primary healthcare, community, voluntary

and statutory services that are available to them and how such services can

assist older adults to stay well, active and connected..”

There are plans to deliver another ‘Keep Well Keep Movin’ Older Adults

Community Health festival in Cork City in June 2023 and in North Cork in

October 2023. If you would like to find out more about the Festival or you

would like to get involved in future events then please contact Nicola Lucey,

Minister Simon Harris Announces Adult Literacy for Life Collaboration & Innovation Fund

On the 20th March, Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Simon Harris announced the opening of a €1 million funding call for new projects to help address unmet literacy needs.

What is the Adult Literacy for Life Collaboration & Innovation Fund?

The ALL Collaboration and Innovation Fund is a €1 million funding call to support collaborative and innovative activities that address unmet literacy, numeracy, or digital literacy needs, develops literacy awareness, and work towards creating a more literacy-friendly society for everyone.

Aim of the Fund:

The ALL Collaboration and Innovation Fund aims to bring regional and community partners all over Ireland together in working towards creating a more literacy-aware society, and achieving the targets set out in the Adult Literacy for Life 10-Year Strategy:

·         Increasing the number of learners engaging with literacy and language support by 20,000 over the first half of the strategy’s lifetime;

·         Reduce the number of adults in Ireland with unmet literacy needs, from 18% to 7%;

·         Reduce the number of adults in Ireland with unmet numeracy needs from 25% to 12%;

·         Reduce the share of adults in Ireland without basic digital skills from 47% to 20%.

The aim of the fund is to encourage fresh and sustainable partnerships between diverse members of our literacy support landscape. That landscape includes those working in education, health, community development, local government, literacy advocacy, and NGOs, to name but a few.

Who Can Apply?

Applications to the ALL Collaboration and Innovation Fund are invited from public, non-profit, community and voluntary organisations across Ireland. A minimum of two organisations working in partnership is required to apply for the fund, with one organisation taking the lead.

Partnerships may include anyone working across Ireland’s diverse and wide-ranging support landscape, including those working in education, health, community development, literacy advocacy, NGOs, local government, civil society organisations and literacy-friendly services.

The maximum grant available is €50,000. There is no minimum amount that may be applied for. Successful projects will showcase collaboration, partnership, and meaningful literacy-awareness and learner-focused outcomes.

Closing date for application to the fund is 5pm on Friday, 14th April.
