Cork County Council’s First Cost Rental Scheme Officially Opened

3 people holding umbrellas and cutting a ribbon

The Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr Joe Carroll and the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien TD have cut the ribbon on Cork County Council’s first Cost Rental scheme at An Cnocán, Bantry.

The development of 10 newly built A-rated two, three and four-bed homes aims to provide affordable rented accommodation to people on middle incomes. Further cost rental schemes will open in Midleton and Bandon in the coming months with the rent at least 25% below private market rents in each area.

The event formed part of a series of site visits to affordable and social housing schemes in County Cork. To date, more than 200 houses have been made available under the Affordable Purchase scheme in seven different towns in County Cork.

Minister O’Brien added, “Building affordable homes to rent is a key part of Government’s Housing for All plan, and cost rental schemes are now becoming a reality across the country. This excellent development in Bantry is one of many – as we work to scale up delivery of affordable and social homes where they are most needed. These homes will have a transformative impact in this area – creating a sustainable, affordable, well-connected community.”

The Minister for Housing also visited a €9.5 million turnkey social housing development at Caherdaniel, Bantry. Construction is underway on the development which will consist of 34 one, two, three and four-bed homes. The first phase of 10 houses is due to transfer to Cork County Council next year.

It was followed by two projects in Macroom, a town regeneration and social housing development in Sleaveen East and 15 affordable homes in Meadowlands. The first phase of the Sleaveen development has delivered 8 apartments on a derelict vacant site in the town centre. The second phase consists of a mix of 16 apartments and townhouses.

The Minister concluded his trip with site visits to Baile Adaim in Carrigtwohill where 23 affordable homes are currently for sale and to Brigown Road, Mitchelstown where 8 social houses are nearing completion.
Cork Co Council’s delivery programme under Housing for All will see 1,350 Social and 280 Affordable dwellings completed by the end of 2024.

Cork County Council Launches Age Friendly Strategy

Moira Murrell, Chief Executive Cork County Council; Liz Downes, Chair of the Older Peoples Council and Cllr Joe Carroll, Mayor of the County of Cork launching the Age Friendly strategy 2024 - 2028.

The Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr Joe Carroll has launched a new framework plan to make County Cork a great place in which to live and grow old. The Cork County Age Friendly Strategy 2024 – 2028 aims to provide a structure for interagency cooperation which is essential to improve the quality of life for older people in the county.

An Age Friendly County is a place where more older people can stay living in their own homes and communities, lead healthy and active lives, go where they want to and be valued contributors to their communities.

The strategy was prepared by the Cork County Age Friendly Alliance and the Older Person’s Council. It is the culmination of a detailed consultation process that brought together older residents and the key service providers.

The framework sets out a series of nine strategic goals and corresponding actions across areas such as transportation, housing, island communities, civic and social participation, health services, inclusion, and employment.

Liz Downes, Chair of Cork County Older People’s Council said, “Age friendly programme strategies are informed by the views and needs of older people. They are the key to the process, their voice is at the heart of the Age Friendly design in every town, village, and community in Cork County. The Cork County Older People’s Council will ensure that older people are valued and appreciated and that they are listened to. If we all play a role in correcting perceptions and enabling greater interactions between generations, we can help to create a more cohesive society for people of all ages.”

To view the Cork County Age Friendly Strategy 2024 – 2028 or for further information visit www.agefriendlyireland.ieor click the link below.

Membership of the Older People’s Council is open to all residents of Cork County over the age of 55. Applications can be requested by emailing agefriendly@corkcoco.ie

Teens and Young Adults invited to Take Part in ‘One County, One Book’ 2024

Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr. Joe Carroll reading 'Freya Harte is Not a Puzzle'.

Cork County Council’s Library and Arts Service has selected ‘Freya Harte Is Not A Puzzle’ by author Méabh Collins as the chosen title for this year’s ‘One County, One Book’ initiative.

Now in its fourth year, ‘One County, One Book’ is designed to promote homegrown literature and literacy as part of the Library’s community outreach programme to young people and is supported by Creative Ireland.

Méabh Collins has a background in both education and children’s literature and blends these skills beautifully in her debut novel with an account of a newly diagnosed autistic teenage girl who very firmly does not want “special treatment” in school.

Freya’s always felt different, so when she learns she’s autistic she doesn't want anyone to know. All she wants is to fit in. But does she really need to change herself or can she find friends who like her just the way she is? ‘Freya Harte Is Not A Puzzle’ centres around friendship, discovering who you really are and being ok with that!

Written with sensitivity and care, this book does a fantastic job of showing how the language and terminology we use matters deeply. It is a school-based exploration of a young teen’s diagnosis as an autistic person and an exceptionally good insight as to what it is to be an autistic person.

In celebration of the book, Secondary School and Youthreach students are invited to Vertigo at Cork County Hall next month for book discussion with author, Méabh Collins. Booking is essential and places can be secured by emailing Cork County Council’s Library and Arts Service at schoolslibrary@corkcoco.ie

Further online events will be held during November to allow students the opportunity to meet and discuss the book.  For further enquiries, email corkcountylibrary@corkcoco.ie

The Pride in Our Community 2024Competition Awards were held with great enthusiasm at the Kingsley Hotel last night, bringing together a diverse array of groups from Cork County and City. This grand event is organized by the Cork County Federation of Muintir na Tire in partnership with Cork County and City Councils.

Distinguished guests in attendance included Mayor of County Cork Cllr. Joe Carroll, Lord Mayor of Cork Cllr. Dan Boyle, President of Cork County Muintir na Tire Seamus Forde, and representatives of Muintir na Tire Community groups from various corners of the city and county.

He said Cork County Council are committed to supporting this competition as they had been since it started seventeen years ago.

This year, the judging panel from Cork County Council and Muintir na Tire was highly impressed by the exceptionally high standard of entries. Ms. Yvonne Cahalane, Chair of the organizing committee, underscored that the competition serves the vital purpose of raising local awareness about the environment and promoting litter-free communities. She noted that this competition is open to all voluntary groups in County Cork and now, in Cork City as well.

President of Cork County Muintir na Tire, Mr Seamus Forde, eloquently emphasized the vital connection between our surroundings and our quality of life. Mr. Forde expressed gratitude to both Councils for their unwavering support in realizing these projects, and he praised the work of Cork County Federation Muintirn a Tire as an example to other counties to follow.

The Mayor of County Cork Cllr. Joe Carroll congratulated Carrigaline Tidy Towns as the "Pride of County Cork " winners and said this underscores the outstanding efforts and dedication of this community group in making their community and Cork County a better place for all. Their project this year was a beautiful sculpture which, represents the flour milling industry in Carrigaline, dating back to 1760. There were two mills in operation in Carrigaline, creatively named locally as the Upper and Lower Mills. The Mills were powered from the Kilmoney River. The Mills closed in 1922.  Cllr. Carroll said the entire community can be proud of their Tidy Towns Group achievements.
