Waterloo Renewal Group Named "Pride of
Cork City" at Prestigious Awards Ceremony
The Pride in Our Community 2024 Competition Awards were
held with great enthusiasm at the Kingsley Hotel last night, bringing together
a diverse array of groups from Cork City and County. This event is organized by
the Cork County Federation of Muintir na Tire in partnership with Cork City and
County Councils.
Distinguished
guests in attendance included the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Dan Boyle, The
Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr. Joe Carroll, President of Cork County Muintir
na Tire Seamus Forde, and representatives of Muintir na Tire Community groups
from various corners of the city and county.
The
Lord Mayor congratulated Waterloo Renewal Group and added “The groups involved are
writing a new chapter in the story of their community in terms of biodiversity,
local heritage and climate change. I would encourage them to continue creating
this new history for their area. I also greatly admire the collaboration
between community groups and local authorities in the effort to tackle issues
such as climate change.”
This
year, the judging panel from Cork City Council and Muintir na Tire was highly
impressed by the exceptionally high standard of entries. Ms Yvonne Cahalane,
Chair of the organizing committee, underscored that the competition serves the
vital purpose of raising local awareness about the environment and promoting
litter-free communities. She noted that this competition is open to all
voluntary groups in County Cork and now, in Cork City as well.
President
of Cork County Muintir na Tire, Mr Seamus Forde eloquently emphasized the vital
connection between our surroundings and our quality of life. He praised the
beauty of Cork City and County, the outstanding projects that contribute to it.
Mr. Forde expressed gratitude to both
Councils for their unwavering support in realizing these projects, and he
praised the work of Cork County Federation Muintir na Tire as an example to
other counties to follow.
Waterloo
Renewal Group's recognition as the "Pride of Cork City" underscores
the outstanding efforts and dedication of this community group in making their
community and Cork City a better place for all. Their Project this year included
walking trails, seating areas, information panels. and areas of wild flower
planting. The entire community can be proud of their achievement.
