West Cork in the Olden Days at Skibbereen Library

  • Friday 15th August at 2.30pm

Fascinating talk about life in the pre-electrification period in West Cork. All are welcome to this free talk. Presented by Marie D'Arcy from the Local Studies Library.

 

Talk and Display of 17th Century scale model of Bandon Town

  • Saturday 16th August at 11.30am

Dr David Pasley of Bandon Tidy Towns Group uses maps, surveys, drawings and archive material to create a handmade scale model of how Bandon would have looked in the 17th Century. With only fragments of Bandon’s historic walls remaining today, this presentation provides an opportunity to travel back in time to see sections of the town’s walls, buildings and streets as the town’s inhabitants would have seen them in the 1600s. Part of the Bandon Walled Town Festival.

 

Talk on Cil Bhrogáin Wells at Bandon Library

  • Saturday 16th August at 2pm

Author Amanda Clarke will delve into the story of St. Brogan, the history of the wells, and the rich traditions and topography of holy wells across Cork. A fascinating look at how these sacred places continue to inspire and connect us through time. This event is organised by Bandon AFC and the Cil Bhrogáin Wells Committee. Part of the Bandon Walled Town Festival.

The Case for Oral Heritage Recording in changing times. Presented by Colum Cronin of the West Cork Oral Heritage Project. Part of the Bandon Walled Town Festival.

 

Talk on the Historical and Archaeological Significance of Fanlobbus Ecclesiastical Site and Graveyard at Dunmanway Library

  • Tuesday 19th August from 2.30pm - 4pm

This talk will focus on the chronological development of the ecclesiastical site at Fanlobbus in the townland of Nedineagh, Dunmanway from the 6th century to present day. 

It will also focus on its role as the famine graveyard which served the wider areas of Dunmanway and Dunmanway Union Workhouse during the Great Famine including new information in relation to the famine pits which will be discussed.

Presented by Michelle O’Mahony – OM History Consultant & Famine Author, Historian with Tommy Collins of Dunmanway Historical Association.

 

Midleton as a Commercial Town Talk at Midleton Library

Historian Tony Harpur will deliver a talk on how Midleton became a commercial town.

 

The Story So Far: 10 Years of the Old Head Signal Tower and Lusitania Museum at Kinsale Library

  • Thursday August 21st at 6pm

Join us at Kinsale Library for a special Heritage Week presentation tracing the remarkable journey of the Old Head Signal Tower project — from a 200-year-old Napoleonic ruin to an award-winning heritage site. This talk, inspired by the museum’s recently released book The Story So Far, explores how a passionate local community transformed the tower into a thriving tourist attraction on the Wild Atlantic Way.

Discover the fascinating history of the Napoleonic Signal Tower, and the tragic story of RMS Lusitania which was torpedoed within sight of the Old Head during WW1. Learn about the museum’s decade-long evolution and hear exciting news about the next chapter — the planning permission approval of Phase 3, which will see the creation of a purpose-built Lusitania Museum building on site.

 

History of Bandon (1600 - 1900) at Bandon Library

Marie D'Arcy will deliver a talk on Bandon's history from the early 1600s to 1900 using resources from the Local Studies Library. Part of the Bandon Walled Town Festival.

 

Music of Many Cultures Workshop at Bandon Library

  • Saturday 23rd August at 11am (children aged 5 - 8 years old)
  • Saturday 23rd August at 1.30pm (children aged 9 - 12 years old)

Join Ruti Lachs for a joyful interactive workshop exploring songs and folk tunes from around the world, including Europe, Africa and South America.

Ruti brings a number of instruments with her, and everyone will have a chance to play along and learn a new tune and a song in another language.

No experience needed, but participants who do play a musical instrument are welcome to bring it with them.

Booking is essential so please contact Bandon Library to secure a place.
