The Climate Action Fund

The Climate Action Fund will support initiatives from the public and private sector that will help Ireland reach its climate and energy targets.  The deadline for applications is October 1st 2018.
The €500million Fund is a central element of the Government's National Development Plan 2018-2027.
Announcing the first Call for Applications Minister Naughten said: "Today is a hugely significant day as I launch the first Call for Applications under the Government's Climate Action Fund.  This Fund is one of the most innovative measures that we announced as part of Project Ireland 2040, where we have ring-fenced half a billion euro for projects that will have a practical and profound effect on the future of our nation and our environment. It's about turning innovative ideas into climate action and using this fund to support larger scale projects that would otherwise not be developed without this support from Government.  The opportunities are endless and I would encourage people to be creative and solution focussed. Projects could range from electrifying our bus fleet, to expanding electric vehicles' charging infrastructure, or the development of district heating projects in our cities, to using farm and food waste as a source of renewable energy.  The Fund is about a new way of problem solving in urban and rural communities, and in business and enterprise on climate and our environment."
This call for applications will provide grant funding to larger scale projects – seeking total support in excess of €1m – that are scheduled to commence development in 2019 or 2020.

The focus will be on supporting a broad range of projects that demonstrate innovation. The types of projects that may be supported include:

§  Renewable energy projects;

§  Energy efficiency projects;

§  District heating projects;

§  Local infrastructure projects (including electric vehicle charging networks); and

§  Projects that enhance the standards of environmental protection.

As the Climate Action Fund develops, further calls will be made.

Minister Naughten concluded: "Effective change is putting the levers for climate action into people's hands and the Climate Action Fund provides an unprecedented opportunity for communities, organisations and individuals. It is a blank canvas. The Fund is about supporting projects that will decrease Ireland's greenhouse gas emissions and increase our use of sustainable energy. The scale of the Climate Action Fund demonstrates the support by the Government in achieving the objectives of the National Mitigation Plan and Project Ireland 2040 – in particular achieving a sustainable, low-carbon society."

Full details of the Climate Action Fund are available on the Department's website.

Confused about what goes into your Recycling bin? Recycling Workshops are here to help

Recycling Workshops aim to help improve Ireland’s recycling rates and reduce levels of contamination in household recycling bins.  Since November 2017 a team of 30 ambassadors have run more than 300 workshops with communities, social groups and businesses across the country. Coming to them to present this free interactive workshop and help to dispel any confusion around recycling in the home.

The majority of householders in Ireland have persistently shown a willingness to recycle and are extremely environment aware, but many are confused about what is suitable for modern day recycling bins. Currently 28% of all material placed in household Mixed Dry Recyclable (MDR) bins is incorrect for example food, grass, nappies etc, this brings with it the added problem of contaminating the other recyclable material.

“The recycling list gives people one simple and clear message about recycling: ‘keep it clean, empty and loose’” Project manager Suzie Cahn .

Launched by Minister Denis Nougthon, the VOICE Recycling Ambassador Programme is the first initiative of its kind to bring together representatives from the Government, Industry and environmental community to bring clarity to the Household recycling bin. By engaging with individuals in communities around this issue the programme aims to bring awareness of the new Recycling list and help to improve recycling rates and reduce contamination across the country.

This is a national programme and is available FREE to community groups, businesses and at events.
Ambassadors will bring the workshop to you, helping you to sort your recyclable cans from your recycling can-nots. To book a workshop you can contact us via the website or contact one of the liaisons who coordinate the programme around the country :

Southern Region :       Tad can be reached at  tad@voiceireland.org
Connaught Ulster:       Aoife can be found at aoife@voiceireland.org
Eastern Midlands:       Clodagfh can be reached at clodagh@voiceireland.org

 The VOICE initiative has been funded by the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment with support from REPAK, project partners are the three regional waste offices (the Southern Region, Connacht Ulster Region and the Eastern Midlands Region).

The natural biodiversity of Ireland has created wonderful landscapes for us to explore and enjoy. To ensure that this continues to be the case for all of us it is important when out and about that you behave in a manner that ensures the protection of all species, habitats and landscapes. The following are some tips:

  • Plan ahead and prepare for your trip checking out access, policies and any equipment needed
  • Be considerate of others especially those who live and work in the countryside
  • Respect farm animals and wildlife ensuring that you do not disturb them
  • Travel and camp on durable ground sticking to existing tracks and campsites where possible
  • Leave what you find respecting property, archaeological
  • Dispose of waste properly either in facilities provided or by bringing it home.
