Fermoy Friendship Week: March 27th - April 1st

Press Release  - Start a Ripple, Create a Wave Fermoy Friendship Week: March 27th - April 1st

Fermoy Friendship week returns again for an action packed week from the March 27th – 1st April.    As in previous years the overall aim is to promote all things that encourage Friendship within the community.

One of the central events for the past number of years has been the participation of all Fermoy based primary schools in the ‘Random Acts of Kindness Initiative’ - the thinking behind this initiative is that everyone loves to read a positive message.  So over the course of Friendship Week we ask all the students, teachers and staff to be more conscious about performing Random Act of Kindnesses.  All kindness stories are written on post-it notes provided and they are placed on the board for everyone to see as a reminder of the positive effect that kindness has on people.  Childcare services in Fermoy will host  a "Theme of Week - Friendship & Kindness Fun Reading Initiative" -  the committee provide books with a friendship theme - last year these were a big hit with the kids.

The week itself kicks off on Monday 27th March with at Friendship Walk - this is hosted by the Walkie Talkie walking group and members of the community are invited to join them on one of their weekly walks; meeting at 10.15am in the Resource Centre.  On the afternoon of Monday 27th a free workshop on Traveller Culture Awareness workshop will be delivered by two traveller ladies living in North Cork.  The key message is to promote understanding and build relationships between the settled and traveller communities.  To book a place on this workshop please contact the Resource Centre on 025 32962.

The Fermoy Community Network have issued an open invitation to all Fermoy Businesses to engage with this initiative- the businesses will promote kindness utilising their own initiative.  Businesses that join in will get a Friendship Logo Window sticker to display at their premises.  Friendship Button Badges will also be on sale over the course of the week.

A unique event will take place at the Alzheimer's Day centre at Rathealy Road on Tuesday 28th March, 10.30 – 12 pm ; it is called ‘Singing for the Brain’.  This event  will form part of the itinerary for Fermoy Friendship Week 2017.  On the morning Fiona Flavin, choir coordinator for 'Singing for the Brain' will be on hand to demonstrate how it works.  Fiona is currently running a similar group in Mallow.  You do not have to be a Tenor or Soprano to attend; no singing experience or talent is necessary and we hope it will be a fun and sociable experience.   This  event is free and an open is issued to all members of the community.

A cornerstone event this year will be the Friendship Variety Show which will take place on the Thursday evening, March 30th.  Already a number of community groups, youth groups and schools have signed up to showcase their musical and artistic talents on the stage of the Palace Theatre at Youth Centre, Ashe Quay.  This event is open to the public with a nominal charge of €5.00 for tickets to help offset the costs of staging the event.  Tickets for this event will be on sale at the box office on the night.

On Friday 31st March from 10.30 - 12.30 members of the Fermoy Active Retirement Group will be giving a demonstration on Curling Demonstration in the dance hall at the Youth Centre, Ashe Quay.  All welcome to come along and try their hand at this wonderful new leisure activity.

The final event of the week will be a treat for all members of the public as our local Emergency Response Services will be hosting a Meet & Greet in the Old Mart Car Park from 10am - 12noon.  There will be lots to see and do on the morning; so be sure to come along.

CREATIVE IRELAND AND THE COUNTY OF CORK

Cork County Council Invites Local Groups, Organisations and Individuals to be part of the Creative Ireland Initiative in County Cork

The Centenary Commemoration of 1916 was a tremendous success in the County of Cork, as it was across the entire nation. In response to the heightened sense of shared identity that was established in 2016, and in respect of the breadth of cultural activity and public engagement that took place, the Irish Government has embarked on an insightful legacy project that sets out to harness the country's culture, arts and heritage over the next five years with the purpose of ensuring 'that Ireland offers a meaningful, value driven quality of life'.

The project, titled 'CREATIVE IRELAND', is an ambitious one and has full government support, firmly based on the principles of collaboration and communication, community empowerment and internationalisation. It has five key strands; Enabling the Creative Potential of Every Child; Enabling Creativity in Every Community; Investing in our Creative and Cultural Infrastructure; Ireland as a Centre of Excellence in Media Production and Unifying our Global Reputation.

The Community Participation strand is being led by local authorities across the country and Cork County Council is currently undertaking a 2017 Creative Ireland action plan for County Cork, as well as a five-year strategy up until 2022, to tie in with the aims of the National Creative Ireland Initiative. To this end a Culture Team has been established within Cork County Council, who will drive and support the County's Creative Ireland undertakings, both in 2017, and in the years ahead.
Whether you are an artist or maker, a member of your local library, a local arts groups, a local historical society, a drama club, or community group in its widest sense, or even if this is something that is purely a personal interest, this is an opportunity to share ideas, pool resources and be part of the creation of a unique and distinctive Cultural Project, with full National Support, in the County of Cork.
With this in mind, Cork County Council will host a series of open meetings for anyone interested in participating in the development and delivery of County Cork's contribution to the Creative Ireland Initiative. Your attendance at any of the following venues would be appreciated:

Location: Bantry Library on Wednesday 29th March, 2017, from 13:00 to 15:00
Location: Midleton Library on Wednesday 29th March, 2017, from 18:00 to 20:00
Location: Mallow Library on Thursday 30th March, 2017, from 13:00 to 15:00

Interested participants are kindly requested to register their interest to attend by emailingcreativeireland@corkcoco.ie before Monday 27th March.
Cork County Council, in addition to organising this series of open meetings, is also seeking written submissions from interested parties with suitable ideas, events and suggestions for the Creative Ireland Initiative in County Cork (these decisions will help to shape and inform the County's Cultural Strategy over the next number of years). Closing date for receipt of said submissions is Monday 03rd April 2016, to be sent to creativeireland@corkcoco.ie

A NOTE ON CRINNIÚ NA CÁSCA:

One of the cornerstones of the National Creative Ireland Initiative, is the establishment of a new national day of cultural celebration - Criunniú na Cásca - that will take place on Easter Monday, April 17th this year, and each and every Easter Monday henceforth. With respect to Crinniú na Cásca 2017, Cork County Council will be supporting a whole range of activities in each of the eight Municipal Districts that make up the wonderful County of Cork. We would be delighted for you/your group to get involved on the day, be it a cultural commemoration of 1916, or an event that recognises the importance of Irish culture to our everyday lives, ranging from art and creativity to local history, language and folklore right through to our natural heritage and archaeological/architectural heritage. Let the events be creative in nature and fully inclusive, inspired by the wonderful culture that surrounds and connects us all. It is hoped, in addition to a most successful Crinniú na Cásca in County Cork, that community based Creative Ireland natured events and projects will take place across the County throughout 2017 and in the many years ahead.

If you would like for any local event/project to form part of the Creative Ireland legacy project in County Cork, please email creativeireland@corkcoco.ie or phone 021 4285905. Should you have a particular event in mind for Crinniú na Cásca, Monday April 17th, 2017, please make contact by Monday 27th March with the said details. Where possible, Cork County Council will support, and certainly promote a range of events throughout each of the eight Municipal Districts in County Cork.

'CREATIVE IRELAND' is a project that will have tremendous benefit for the County of Cork and one very much to look forward to. For further information, emailcreativeireland@corkcoco.ie or phone 021 4285905.

HERITAGE COUNCIL GRANT SCHEMES 2017
The Heritage Council has just announced the 2017 Community Heritage Grants Scheme, in addition to two further new schemes - a Grant Scheme for the Museum Standards Programme of Ireland Participants and a Thatch Conservation Grant Scheme.

The first of these, the 2017 Community Heritage Grants Scheme, will see €700,000 made available for a range of different projects and undertakings. The scheme aims to promote appreciation and enjoyment of heritage, and to make a lasting difference to heritage, people and communities. Through the Scheme the Heritage Council intends to reach out to new audiences and make heritage accessible to people with special needs, young adults and minorities, for example. They seek to support 'creative, engaging projects that provide a way for the public to learn about and manage our natural and cultural heritage'.

Many different projects can be applied for under the scheme ranging from surveys and audits of a range of heritage attributes, from wildlife to folklore, as well as report and plans, conservation works, National Heritage Week initiatives and community efforts to educated about and manage heritage.

In relation to all successful projects, work on same must have commenced by the end of May 2017 and will need to be completed by 17th November, 2017. In 2016, the scheme saw over 400 applications, 171 of which, were successful. These included six from the County of Cork totaling a sum of €38,400 - a considerable boost to heritage spend within the County. Successful projects included a conservation plan for a church and graveyard in Inchigeela, Conservation works at Donnybrook House, conservation of the wooden ship deck of the ILEN Vessel, conservation of Bandon's King Billy Flag, a conservation report for the Allin Institute Community Building in Bandon and a conservation plan for the O' Daly bardic school on the Sheep's Head peninsula. In 2017 it is anticipated that 150 plus applications will be successful and given the scope of projects that could be applied for it is hoped that the County of Cork will see a number of successful applications. The closing date for applications, all of which must be made online atwww.heritagecouncil.ie, is 5pm on Friday, 24th March, 2017.

The second Heritage Council Scheme is called the Caring for Collections Scheme. €50,000 has been made available for the scheme, which can only be applied for by existing museums/institutions already participating in the Museum Standards Programme for Ireland (MSPI). The third Heritage Council Scheme on offer is for those who intend to carry out good practice in thatch conservation. Under this scheme €70,000 is being made available nationally and one of the main aims is to ensure the longevity of thatching as a trade such that projects that include demonstration or teaching a trainee will in principle be very well received. The two aforementioned Grant Schemes also close on March 24th at 5pm and again it is hoped that the County of Cork will see a number of successful applications.

The Muintir na tire Cork School garden competition was officially launched last week by Deputy County Mayor Cllr. Muintir na Tire, Cork County Council and the team at Griffins created a Real buzz at the official Launch of the Competition.

This year Griffins are awarding a special award for the best 'Bee friendly School Garden' and the Bee mobile was a great attraction to all at the launch. Margaret Griffin and the Local beekeepers have asked all schools to help protect our bees and Plants Bee friendly gardens. Her message is simple. Plant flowers and bees will follow. Through the Cork Schools garden competition, Muintir na Tire Griffins and Cork County Council will reward schools for their hard work with biodiversity and bee friendly gardening.

Dr. Mary Stack Environmental Awareness Officer of Cork County council encouraged schools to rethink, repair, refurbish along with reusing & recycling items in their garden as this is very important for the environment.

Conor Nelligan Heritage Officer, urged schools to think Biodiversity when gardening. He particularly suggested the inclusion of natural hedges, log piles, bird boxes, bird tables, wildflower meadows, nature-trails and the use of native flora.

Sean Holland of Muintir na Tire who co-ordinate the competition thanked Cork County Council and Griffins Garden Centre for all their support in organising the Competition. He said that Garden Categories for 2017 will include Edible Garden, Biodiversity/Wildlife Garden, Up-Cycling Art and colour Garden, Mixed Garden, Small Garden, Best New Garden , Innovation and Creativity and the overall best Pride of County Cork Garden for which all schools will be automatically judged. CASTLEMARTYR RECOGNISED IN NATIONAL HERITAGE WEEK AWARDS
Castlemartyr has been recognised on the National Heritage Stage, having picked up a short-listing award in the 2016 National Heritage Week Awards. The short-listing award was presented at a recent event in Dublin to David and Liz Maddox of the Castlemartyr John Saul Appreciation Society, by Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Minister Heather Humphreys, T.D. Also present at this prestigious event was Minister David Stanton, T.D.; Heritage Council Chief Executive, Michael Starrett; Chair of the Heritage Council Board, Michael Parsons and Cork County Council Heritage Officer, Conor Nelligan.
The short-listing Award was presented to the Castlemartyr John Saul Appreciation Society for the fantastic work they have been undertaking in promoting the wonderful connection between Castlemartyr and John Saul - the famous horticulturist who left Ireland for American shores in the mid 19th century and designed some of America's most famous Civic open spaces including the White House Grounds, the Mall, Smithsonian Grounds, Lafayette Park and the Ellipse to name but a few.
In 2016 Heritage Week saw over 1,800 events taking place nationally. The National Heritage Week Awards recognises 12 outstanding achievements in four different categories and it is testament to the work of the Castlemartyr John Saul Appreciation Society that they received such recognition in the Reaching Out Category - a Category that recognises organisers who reach out to new audiences and help more people enjoy Heritage Week. At the 2016 John Saul Event, the society reached out to local family carers, disability groups, the elderly and young people to help in the organisation and enjoyment of the event.
The receiving of this award for Castlemartyr comes as great news and adds to the strength and depth of heritage in the East Cork and wider Cork area. Well done to Liz, David and all in the Castlemartyr John Saul Appreciation Society.

Community Groups and Charity Regulator

Dear colleagues.

We continue to receive many queries on whether groups (Community Councils and Community Alert Groups) need to register with the Charities Regulator. Our initial advice from the Charities Regulator was that they all needed to register, as their activities are for the public good (and therefore they are charities). We have recently met with the Regulator’s office to explain the difficulties this can cause, particularly for smaller groups. The Regulator has therefore agreed that, for the time being, any group that is currently affiliated to Muintir na Tire does NOT need to register separately. If they wish to do so, they may.

There will be ongoing discussions with the Regulator’s Office and it is likely that groups will need some form of registration, possibly in about 2 years’ time. However, this is likely to be a simplified registration procedure for groups which are affiliated to Muintir na Tire and we will advise you at the time.

Please note this dispensation is only available to groups which are currently affiliated. All other groups must now register separately. This is another benefit of your affiliation (similar to being allowed use our CHY number rather than having to register with Revenue) and we thank those of you who continue to affiliate. If your affiliation has lapsed and you would like to bring it up to date before having to register with the Charities Regulator, please contact our office.

If you require any further information or clarification please do not hesitate to contact me.

Regards
Niall

Closure of 80 post offices described as “another nail in the coffin” for rural Ireland.

Speaking at the AGM of Cork County Muintir na Tire County President Mr Sean Murphy came out in support of the retention of Post Offices. He said Post Offices must be supported on the ground as when they are gone some communities are left with no social space whatsoever. He said the there must also be support from the government for the retention of Post Offices. Their future will be dependent on Government support for rural post offices if they are to survive into the future.
Mr Sean Murphy (Left) President of Cork County Muintir na Tire with Sean Holland and Annette Lane Chairperson at the Muintir na Tire AGM in Ballyphehane Last Night.

The proposed closure of 80 post offices has been described as a “serious blow” and “another nail in the coffin” for rural Ireland.
The proposal is believed to be included in a report by businessman Bobby Kerr on the future of post offices, which has not yet been published.
Irish Postmasters’ Union (IPU) general secretary Ned O’Hara has also called on An Post to publish the report in full as soon as possible.
“There’s a danger if there’s no action that not only 80 but 500 to 600 [post offices] could close because postmasters can’t make a living out of them. They want to provide more services, they can’t provide more services,” he said.
“Bobby Kerr has a comprehensive plan and not just about 80 closures but additional services, both Government and financial , with new services and appropriate investment. It is a complete plan.”

Aim to curb losses

The five-year plan was created with the aim of curbing losses estimated to be between €12 to €15 million a year for the postal group.
Mr O’Hara said there had been ongoing discussions between the Government and the union, and between the Government and An Post, since January - but not with all three parties at the same time.
“They’re not going anywhere,” he said. “We want to get into a room with An Post and eliminate the gaps between our position and their position on the recommendations. From our point of view, the gaps are surmountable.
“The plan is high-level recommendations. We need a detailed plan now. We want to focus on the solutions,” he said.
The report states there is a total of 1,135 post offices operating across Ireland with about 1.7 million customers every week. There were 1,907 post offices in 1992.
“The people of Ireland tell us they want services in the post office and without it they’d feel abandoned. There’s been lots of research to back this up,” Mr O’Hara said.
