Funded opportunities for young people aged 15-30 years to take part in Sail Training voyages.

Attention Youth Co-ordinators

We hope you had a great break over Christmas and have welcomed the start to the new year!

I am writing to you regarding some funded opportunities for young people aged 15-30 years to take part in Sail Training voyages.

As you may be aware, Sail Training Ireland is the National Charity that sponsors and supports young people, from all backgrounds, to take part in voyages at sea on Tall Ships and large yachts. This can be a life-changing experience and often has profound effects on the attitudes, behaviours and outlook of the participants. For more information on our work please find attached our 2015 Annual Report.

In 2014 and 2015 we have worked with local partners to develop a Cork / Southern-Region Bursary Scheme to sponsor young people from your area. The key supporters of this scheme in 2015 were Port of Cork and EMC along with The National Maritime College of Ireland, Ardmore Shipping and the Institute of Master Mariners.

We are committed to developing this scheme further for 2016. Voyages will take place on the locally based vessel "Spirit of Oysterhaven" as well as on The Dutch Tall Ship "Morgenster" and perhaps some other vessels such as the UK Tall Ship "Maybe". Cross-border Youth Exchanges, funded under EU Commissions "Erasmus +" funding scheme are arranged on the Maybe and the Morgenster. See images of the ships attached and a video of our 2015 Youth Exchange project on the Morgenster.

To begin the process of selecting participants to receive the funding we have organised a meeting in the Port of Cork Customs building at 11am on Tuesday 19th January for 'Nominating Organisations'.(These are organisations, such as yours, who work with or support young people. These are requested to nominate candidates that are in need of, or would benefit from this funded opportunity). The age range is 15-30 years for participants.

The purpose of the meeting is firstly, to thank you for your involvement by nominating and supporting young people in previous years and secondly to brief you on how to continue to be involved. If you are new to the idea of Sail training for Youth Development it is a great opportunity to learn more, ask questions and find out how to get involved.

We look forward to welcoming you there, Please RSVP to info@irishsailtraining.com

We welcome your questions and please feel free to circulate this invitation to any organisations that work with young people in your region.
